i think hashida wanted sae to continue making art and persevere. her quitting is not on him, but he treats it as such—convincing himself teaching is something he's not cut out for, just like art.

the look in hashida's eyes... i think he saw himself in this kid the moment she said those words. why he's always observing at a distance, why he's so appreciative of the artwork of others, why he's so interested in artists, why he's deeply fascinated with the artwork of children who have yet to experience what he has... until—

perhaps this is hashida's inner conflict—a ceiling he's made for himself because he believes he's inferior to everyone around him, how he'll never reach their level, so he just stands there with his metaphorical wall... between him and his potential.

that much he knows himself...
