“Hush, little one,” he croons to the wailing tiny bundle in the crib he’s gently rocking back and forth. “Hush, now. Mama’s tryin’ to get some sleep.”

In spite of his soothing words, the baby squalls even louder, her small face screwed up in what could only be consternation, small fists waving indignantly.

“Mama’s awake,” you say as you come in to the room. “She can sense that you’re panicked, you know.”

Victor huffs out a sigh. “I don’t know what else to do. I checked her diaper an’  sang her a song. Hell, I even told her the filthiest limerick I know. Nothin’ seems to help.”

While lying bed, you’d heard your mate warbling a lullaby, his deep sandpaper voice cracking gently on the high notes. Your heart had swelled in your chest because he was trying so hard to be a good dad, doing everything a new dad should be doing…except for one thing.

“Have you tried picking her up?”

His stills at your words, the bassinet screeching to an abrupt stop, which serves to amp the baby up even further. She really goes for it, stretching her minuscule lungs to the breaking point.

“I can’t.” Victor brandishes his hands at you, each large finger tipped with a dangerously lethal claw, claws that had shredded the flesh of countless people. “I’ll hurt her.”

He’d never hesitated to use his claws to hurt others before, but the pain in etched across his face is as clear as day.

“No, you won’t.” You cross to the cradle and delicately scoop the wailing infant into your arms.

“You don’t know what I’m capable of.” He laughs bitterly as he flexes his killer hands.

“I know exactly what you’re capable of,” you reply, “and you’re absolutely capable of holding your daughter.”

Before he can protest again, you tenderly tuck the baby into his arms, and mercy of mercies, her cries come to an immediate stop. Her eyes lock on Victor’s amber ones and for a brief moment, you think she’s going to start howling again, but instead, she makes a happy little sighing sound before snuggling against him.

“See?” You place a hand on his shoulder. “She just wanted her daddy.”

“Well, hello, my angel,” Victor whispers as he stares down at his daughter in wonder.

After a few minutes, you leave your mate and child together, one just as enamoured with the other, and return to the warmth of your bed. As your eyes flutter shut, you think, Victor Creed, a daddy. Who would’ve thought?
