Something that gets lost in translation for me is the idea of "I don't want your pity!". Like you don't want someone to go through the natural feeling of compassion in the face of someone else's distress? Does pity mean something else in english? Is this a protestant thing? It's been confusing me for years.
My fate is such that I am writing a romance book in which the main character is so shy about their feelings they don't even tell me.
E.G.: there's a scene in which Ariel sees a sliver of Dante's skin and when I try to write it there's no emotional response to that other than vague unholy vibes. I turn to them like "well, what is this now?" and they're toeing the floor and shrugging.
