Fenumin and his... whatever the hell, MiāEnasalin
Picrews are great
In a culture where tattoos are sacred and hold deep meanings and even religious significance, like the Dalish - and even more so in Elvhenan where it symbolizes a binding - Mi'Enasalin chose to get a tattoo symbolizing Fenumin.
Honestly Fenuminās āIām getting old and I hate itā breakdown in Modern AU is one of the best and sweetest moments he has with MiāEnasalin because it ends with the two of them sitting on the floor while Fenumin cries for the first time in years and MiāEnasalin just leans over and murmurs, as seriously as he can,Ā āWill you still love me when Iām old and grey and have erectile dysfunction?ā And Fenumin just starts laughing hysterically.
Meta about how Fenumin's view and opinion on Mi'Enasalin changes after the veil in the verse where they survive
send me a topic to write a meta about my muse on
First of all I love you; thank you so much for sending this in and giving me an excuse to talk about The Other Verse Where They Get Healthy.Content warnings: Unhealthy relationships, but this one gets better.So. Fenumin and MiāEnasalinās relationship pre-Veil has what they both believe to be a necessary foundation formed of two crucial understandings: the first, that Fenumin does not love MiāEnasalin and in fact finds him loathsome and disgusting as a person; and the second, that theyāre both ultimately disposable to each other and could be easily replaced if the need arose. The Veil shatters both of those understandings. The first major shift comes when Fenumin, trapped in Vir Dirthara after the eluvians stop working properly, realizes a part of him expectsĀ MiāEnasalin to find a way to save him. While it isnāt truly an earnest belief - more a mad hope in the face of insurmountable odds; something to daydream about while he starves to death - the fact that it exists at all surprises him. The fact that MiāEnasalinĀ is the savior he dreams of catches him off guard, and makes him realize some part of him didnātĀ hate MiāEnasalin, at least not nearly as much as he thought. In his personal canon (where he dies in Vir Dirthara), itās something of a bittersweet revelation, one he feels aptly summarizes their entire relationship: a series of deliberate misunderstandings and realizing things too late.In this AU, though, more or less justĀ as Fenuminās starting to dwell on the issue, MiāEnasalin (through means I havenāt ever really bothered to explore in detail) manages to find a functional eluvian, and comes to Fenuminās rescue. This throws something of a massive wrench into their relationship - while Fenumin is obviously glad to be rescued and is under no illusion that MiāEnasalin didnātĀ save his life, suddenly heās on rocky ground: he has to confront the fact that the man he claims to hateĀ saved his life, coming to his rescue against all odds, when - by the second founding rule of their relationship - MiāEnasalin could have and shouldĀ have simply moved on and found someone else. In fact, Fenumin lists several people MiāEnasalin could have pursued instead (including Dacien), demanding to know whyĀ MiāEnasalin exerted the time, effort, and energy necessary to find a way into the library for his sake.Itās a major turning point, and it demands both of them to re-evaluate how they feel and what they want from each other - until then their relationship has been almost entirely sexual, with only extremelyĀ limited casual interactions. Suddenly they have to surviveĀ in a world where the elvhen are being captured and enslaved following the disappearance of the Evanuris, the appearance of the Veil, and the fall of Arlathan and Elvhenan as a whole - and that means they have to actually learnĀ about each other, how the other works and thinks. (They are, as it turns out, uniquely well-suited to surviving together: Fenumin cooks, knows extensive herb lore, knows his way around the pillaged remnants of towns, and is a healer; while MiāEnasalin is a master of stealth, skilled at hunting, and a master in a fight when the need arises.)Ultimately, time and exposure soften them toward one another, and they develop an actual rapport. This is alsoĀ the first time Fenumin realizes itās possible to have a violent sexual relationship without sacrificing affection outsideĀ of sex, and he (very) slowly becomes more affectionate in time - never anything sappy, gods forbid, but small gestures. He becomes particularly fond of playing with MiāEnasalinās hair, something he never wouldāve dreamed of before.Ā They also learn to cuddle, something Fenumin actively avoided previously. It starts as huddling up for warmth as protection from the elements, and gradually evolves into actual cuddling. They learn to talk to each other. They never really stop casually insulting each other, but MiāEnasalin stops calling Fenumin a whore in casual conversation, and Fenumin starts calling MiāEnasalin by name more often than not. But perhaps more important than their conversations is the fact that they donāt needĀ to talk all that often; their later years are characterized by long companionable silences and meaningful looks. Fenumin gets incredibly anxious as signs of aging begin to appear, but MiāEnasalin laughs off his concerns.Basically, their relationship becomes healthier as theyāre forced to confront the fact that everything they thought they knew about it was wrong. Fenuminās emotional intimacy issues donāt really get addressedĀ so much as they get steamrolledĀ by the necessity of their post-Veil circumstances, but the end result is still a softer bond where at the very least they likeĀ each other on some level. Itās also an AU where MiāEnasalin realizes his love for Fenumin outweighs his ambition, which... kind of makes himĀ a little sappy sometimes, in his own way.Basically itās a good verse I love this verseĀ

Important MiāEnasalin Facts
Donāt let Fenumin fool you: Mi'Enasalin is terrifyingly intelligent, and a skilled tactician.
He was once a soldier for Falon'Din, and bears his vallaslin as a result. Dirthamen selected him personally. It has absolutely gone to his head.
He does genuinely love Fenumin. Heās just bad at showing it.
He has suffered many head/face injuries over the years, and sometimes has difficulty seeing in bright light as a result. Even in dimmer light, he has trouble keeping his eyes completely open at times.
Relatedly, he is prone to headaches and migraines. Fenumin gives him medication to alleviate the pain.
Though he prefers daggers and magic, Mi'Enasalin is a master of nearly every weapon, including unarmed combat. He likes to think of himself as the deadliest weapon in Dirthamenās arsenal.
In all verses he has a tattoo of a viper coiled around a dagger, representing Fenumin. The exact design of the tattoo varies in complexity from verse to verse⦠but it is always on his inner thigh. In some verses he has another tattoo - of a fox surrounded by poisonous flowers - over his heart. Fenumin doesnāt typically know this tattoo also represents him, becauseā¦
ā¦Fenumin does not know ālittle foxā is a nickname Mi'Enasalin uses for him, as he only uses that one when speaking of Fenumin to other people, and it is his most affectionate nickname.
In Elvhenan verse, Fenumin is older than Mi'Enasalin by a matter of just under a century. In every other verse theyāre the same age.
The Arrow
Itās not quite dawn when Fenumin slips out of the clanās encampment, but the scouts keeping watch say nothing to stop him - itās common that Fenumin cannot sleep and cannot remain idle; itās common for him to slip off into the woods unaccompanied, to begin his near-daily search for useful herbs and other plants in the undergrowth. The scouts - indeed, the clanĀ - do not need to know it isnāt plants heās seeking today. Not plants at all, but a single arrow embedded in an ancient tree, fletched in familiar shades of red and gold. A declaration. An invitation. I am here,Ā the arrow says. Come find me. So Fenumin does, as always he must, navigating the forest paths with only the waning moonlight to guide him back to where he spotted the arrow among the green branches. He knows these woods. He knows these paths. And he knows MiāEnasalin.
Someone: I don't know who Fenumin is at all. You've known him for centuries, right? I'd just like to get to know him better - I feel like I don't know anything about him.
