We just spent two whole seasons focused on the fact that vessels have to consent to become vessels
I clocked that soulless Sam is Sam's vessel approximately three episodes before Balthazar explicitly said as much
Sam was incapable of consenting to this whole thing
Sam refused to consent to being Lucifer's vessel until there was absolutely no other choice
Sam's vessel begged Dean not to return his soul to him
Sam has a long history of people doing things to him without his consent or input
Dean, honey, I know you have Sam's best interests at heart and you're trying to look out for him, but this is one of the most violating things you could have done. And we're supposed to believe it was the right choice for Sam.
