I do think 1. Caleb's reappearance and 2. Melissa's descent into near-cruelty are leading towards the (intentional) recreation of the same environment Jacob grew up in as a means of forcing him to face it.
Already, he's acting different (and more mature) than he did earlier: instead of putting the blame on his brother, even subconsciously, he is actively supporting Caleb (even if he hurts himself in the process). I think we will see him learn how to stop being passive aggressive and take charge of his life, relationships, and self-respect.
He is going to be challenged by having to make a decision about his life. Will he continue to tolerate this treatment, this repetition of the worst years of his childhood, or will he make the decision to change his situation? And it has to be an active choice. Which, inherently, will scare him.
I mean, him allowing Melissa (his landlord) to kick him out of the room he PAYS FOR is ridiculous. At the end of the day, she can not physically make him move. He agreed to it. And that is where his weakness lies, and where we will see if he can learn to stand up for himself. He can either continue to sleep on the couch or make the decision to 1. move in with his BF or 2. demand his room back.

How did the mlp writers get away with have a sh allegory as the main plot line of an episode this is a kids show๐ญ
Once again getting narrative whiplash from "the boys face off against Lucifer with the favourite squad" to "the boys check into a mental hospital for a case and almost go insane for real" to "Sam is bodyswapped with a teenager and has to survive high school" to "the angels go back in time to kill John and Mary". Nobody does it like Supernatural.
