Lets just take a moment to think about how in the end scene, old Merlin has just as much heart break and emotion on his face as when he lost Arthur all those years ago. Hundreds of years have passed and he will never stop waiting for Arthur's return, he will never stop being loyal. And the thing that makes it worse is that everyone in the modern day just sees this old man, lonely and sad living by the river. But what they don't know is that this man is the most powerful and faithful man to have ever lived.
