Day 4 - Travel
A little doodle I did for @usernoneexistentâs summer Break Challenge. The dragon and trees I found on google cuz they are so hard to draw 𤥠Anyways hereâs Kaari on Ryoko going for an evening ride.
đ thunderstorm, character of your choice pls!
"Hey Dev! Watch this, Ryoko just learned a new thing!" Kaari exclaimed proudly as the three of them stood in the grass on the edge of the Forbidden Forest one sunny afternoon.
Devon watched in amusement as Ryoko looked up at Kaari proudly before turning to the forest. Both of their hair suddenly stood up and sparks shot from Ryoko's scales in all directions. Only Kaari could hear the hum of electricity in the air. A split second later, Ryoko's mouth opened and a crackling bolt of brilliant blue electricity shot out into the air. It streaked past them and impacted the side of a tree sending shards of wood in every direction.
"See! Wasn't that the coolest, Dev?" Kaari whipped around to remark before stopping dead.
Devon wasn't smiling anymore. Instead, she was crouched low in the grass with her hands holding her face and shoulder, tears streaming down her face.
All she could hear in her mind was the familiar sound of electricity splintering wood, the very last sound she had ever heard before the world was plunged into silence. The arc of crackling blue light was exactly the same as that day in the forest. Visions of it heading straight for her looped in her mind and she could almost feel the searing hot burning once again as it coursed through her body, leaving scars on her face, shoulder, torso, and arm.
"Oh, Dev... I'm sorry, I didn't think. Are you ok?" She heard Kaari mumble in her mind, shaking her out of it.
Looking to the side, Devon saw Ryoko gently nuzzling her arm with his head, clearly worried he had done something to upset her.
"It's ok, Ryoko," she signed and then rubbed his nose.
"I'm ok. Tell him he did great, Kaari," she signed up at him this time with a weak smile.

A/N: ehehe angst drabble for you cuz both Kaari/Ryoko and Devon fit this prompt so well so I had the thought that Devon might have had a bit of PTSD from the death eater attack. I headcanon that Ryoko really helps her get over her fear of lightning after that. She ends up loving lightning and thunder storms because they remind her of Ryoko and not that moment in the forest. If shes ever riding him while he shoots lighting, she can feel the deep rumble of Ryoko under her and its just like the rumbling she feels in her chest during thunder, since she cant hear it.

ââââââââ-
The light was fading as the curly haired boy left the village and entered the thick pine tree forest. Sticks cracked underneath his fur skin boots as he made his way deeper in. The further he went, the darker it became as the pines got closer together and covered the greying sky.
Kaari often explored and hunted in the forest alone, as many of Skalafells residents did, including his family. Being a wizarding trade port, they had access to anything they needed to survive in the wilderness of Norway. However, they did occasionally enjoy foraging and hunting off the land themselves without magic. At the moment, Kaari was on a mission to collect some bird eggs for his mother Else. She had run out and the next ship delivery wasnât due for another week.
Being only 10 years old, Kaari had yet to start school and attain a wand, but that didnât trouble him. As he walked, the sheath of his dagger swayed at his side, hitting his thigh with each step. It was an Arcano tradition to teach their children combat with Muggle weapons to keep them safe without the use of magic. They are taught the basic use of shortswords, longswords, bows, axes, shields, and the like. Kaaris' preferred weapon was a dagger. He liked the control it afforded him and the ability to carry around without being clunky or heavy. He was also quite proficient with a bow if need be.
Keeping his gaze towards the tops of the trees, he scanned the branches for nests. He walked for nearly an hour before he spotted one nestled on the highest boughs of a tree. The boy took a second to plan his path and then, unsheathing his dagger, he started to climb using the dagger as an aid. His progress was slow but careful. Eventually he broke through the canopy and a cold wind stung his face and ears. The sky had gotten darker and snowflakes began to gently fall and land on Kaariâs hair.
Gathering a couple small speckled eggs, he carefully placed them in a small sack to his side. Looking back at the nest he noticed a large feather of what he guessed belonged to a gull. Suddenly the wind howled, shaking the pine trees and sending the feather high into the sky. Kaari watched in wonder as it danced and twirled with the snow. He longed to be a bird and join it in the sky, free to go anywhere.
A second gust, stronger this time, shakes Kaari from his daydream and almost pushes him off the tree. Steadying himself, he decides to climb down and continue his search for more nests. He walks for another ten minutes, the snowfall getting heavier by the minute as it starts to break the canopy and trickle down to the forest floor. Kaari was thinking about turning back when suddenly he tripped on something he didnât see. Throwing his arms out to break his fall, he landed face first on to the cold hard ground now covered in a thin layer of snow.
An inspection of the area behind him revealed multiple large jagged eggshell fragments. Except these werenât regular eggs. The fragments shifted colors from grey to green to blue so frequently that Kaari couldnât tell what color they actually were. There was no doubt about it. These were dragon eggs.
Kaariâs favorite thing of all was dragons. He spent many days reading all the books he could about them. By age 5, he knew all of the known dragon species, and this dragon egg was like no other known.
Kaari noticed that there was a trail of eggshells going off into the forest. Following them, the trees suddenly ended and he came upon a tall cliff looking out into the sea. The wind howled as it broke upon the cliffside and whipped Kaariâs coat around, chilling him to the bone. Upon the edge lay a huge dragon nest made of sticks, leaves and bird feathers. Inside the nest was more of the broken eggshells. Then he spotted it. There was one egg left intact.
Carefully stepping into the nest, Kaari took the egg into his arms. He didnât know if the dragon was alive or not but clearly it was abandoned by its parents and siblings. The snow was coming down in heavy blankets by now and he knew he had to get back home soon but he couldnât leave the egg here to freeze. So he made a decision. He tucked the egg into his coat to keep it warm and started to head back the way he came.
The snow kept blowing at such a feriocity that the pine trees stopped offering cover to Kaari. Within half an hour the snow was so deep that it reached the boys waist and he struggled to keep going. He was so tired and couldnât feel his feet but he kept trudging until he spotted a fallen tree that the snow had gathered overtop, offering a hollow shelter within. There he sat, his knees and the egg pulled up to his chest and his coat wrapped tightly around.
Kaari was almost asleep when he thought he felt a thump to his chest. He almost ignored it, thinking he dreamt it, when there was a thump again, harder this time. He pulled his coat apart just in time to see the egg splinter, crack and then shatter apart.
There looking up at him was a tiny baby dragon. Itâs scales were grey. No, they were green. Maybe they were blue? Kaari couldnât tell. The only thing he did know was that this was a new species of dragon never discovered before. He was ecstatic with glee.
The dragon cocked itâs head sideways as it looked at the boy. Kaari reached out to pet him but it snapped defensively and retreated to the opposite side of the shelter.
âHey there. Itâs ok! I'm a friend.â He gently told the dragon as he reached into his side bag and pulled out one of the small speckled eggs, cracking it open and offering it forward.
In an instant, the dragon raced forward and stuck its head into the egg, eating up the yellow liquid as fast as it could. Before long, Kaari had fed all of his eggs to the dragon and it burped happily.
âYouâre a very hungry dragon arenât you?â He chuckled warmly. âMy mom wonât be too happy but you need it more than us.â
As Kaari talked to the baby dragon, it slowly approached him and reproachfully climbed into his lap, sniffing and shoving his head into his coat.
âIâm sorry but I donât have any more. But you could come live with me and Iâll catch you as many fish as you can eat! What do you think...Ryoko?â He asked.
The dragon, now named Ryoko, stared silently for a minute but then pushed his way deeper into his coat and curled up. Within a few seconds, he was snoring gently.
Kaari laughed and pulled the coat tighter around him. âIâll take that as a yes. Weâre gonna be best friends, you and I.â
âIf we ever get back home, mom is going to be so mad.â
ââHey mom! I didnât get your eggs but I brought home a baby dragon instead!ââ He sarcastically muttered to himself. âIâm so dead.â
In the morning the sun rose, the storm finally having passed by. Kaari walked out of the forest and into his house with Ryoko perched on his shoulder the whole way. His mother was so worried about him that she wasnât nearly as mad as he expected, pulling him into a tight hug. Plus, she had to admit Ryoko was pretty cute.

Lucia-âBesides Ryoko, what is your favourite dragonâ
âOh cmon, I canât say Ryoko?â He chuckles with a grin. âThis is such an unfair question.â
âAll dragons are fascinating and deserve our respect. However...If I had to pick one besides the Scandinavian Scaleshifter, Iâd probably say the Swedish Short-Snout. They are one of the dragons that doesnât have a traditional orange/red flame. They are also one of the dragons most in danger because their skin is highly prized for its flame resistance and used in clothing. Itâs totally bullshit.â
âThat being said, Ryoko will forever be my favorite boy. Isnât that right, bud?â He says as Ryoko nudges him from behind.
