The rain wasn’t going to stop this time.

It dripped down the stone entrance of the cave called home, the closest he could get when returning to the Free Marches. It permeated his dirt and grime covered skin, a cold kissed reminder of everything that had occurred up until now.

And being so close to that blighted city—it did nothing for his comfort. It frayed his brain at the edges, Anders was sure it even made his skin crawl. He shivered and tugged the ragged feathered coat even more around himself, knees tucked impossibly farther against his chest in his spot against the stone wall. It was just out of way of sight from the entrance, but at least from here he was able to still see the water that came down.

It was supposed to be relaxing; it was supposed to be comforting. It did neither of those, just furthered the wave of paranoia that was washing over his mind.

“—!” Wet squelching and the crunch of mud and grass coming from outside had the mage pressing more against the wall out of instinct, his gaze kept partially trained on the opening.
