Why I Painted This Painting I like the grainy texture of really old movies. Silent movies are like operas where every gesture is amplified, calculated to gain your empathy. Evelyn Nesbit was a silent film star who, while looking rather childlike here, was caught up in scandal. (I like scandal too.) She apparently became embroiled in a extramarital affair that ended with the murder of her lover by her enraged husband. But to look at her image here, with her halo of sun drenched hair, she seems mythical and tranquil with her goddess gaze. Neither old nor young, she is at the perfect age for an actress. She has a similar gaze of Paul Delvaux’s somnambulistic nudes in his surrealist dreamscapes. Like Botticelli's Venus, the girl’s got secret and she’s not giving it up easily. I placed her against the backdrop of the Yoshino cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin.
