‘When you put a seed in the ground, the seed doesn’t say, “Well, it’s eight hours, I’m going to stop growing.” … That’s why I think that every minute that we’re attached to this earth, we should be doing something.’
‘Art exercises more mental skills than any other activity I can think of.’

“Art is for everyone. It is not something that you should have to go to the museums in order to see and enjoy.” —Ruth Asawa, sculptor, art activist and educator 🎨📚 Illustration from my book Women in Art . . . #womeninart #ruthasawa @ruthasawa #womenshistory https://www.instagram.com/p/B7mSh0EpVEA/?igshid=1783grnlfb842
#pattern #sculpture #lithographie #RuthAsawa #cooperhewitt Ruth Asawa was born on this day in 1926.⠀ ⠀ Asawa was born in California, the daughter of Japanese immigrants, and spent her childhood working on her family’s farm. In 1942, the entire Asawa family were sent to internment camps. During her eighteen-month internment, she began to draw.⠀ ⠀ At age 20, Asawa enrolled in the legendary Black Mountain College, an experimental school where she studied with Josef Albers, Merce Cunningham, and Buckminster Fuller. ⠀ ⠀ Best known for her intricate wire sculptures, Asawa also created lithographs. In the 1960s, during her fellowship at the famed Tamarind Lithography Workshop founded by June Wayne, she printed this lithograph, titled Chair. The fine lines and exploration of patterns echo the forms of Asawa’s wire sculptures. ⠀ ⠀ #RuthAsawa #LIthograph #Design https://www.instagram.com/p/B7u_r6Tq7vK/?igshid=n0hyejbfpyj6
