To be honest O and Callie were the problem. Despite what they said they were having a very hard time adjusting to me being different. They wanted their Rusty and I wasn’t him. I didn’t want to cuddle or even sleep in the same room. I… I didn’t fall immediately back in love. I still loved them, but it wasn’t the way I did when I was a teenager - not yet at least. Callie kept trying to do things like when we were teens and then she’d realize it was stressing me out and stop. O on the other hand was endlessly frustrated with the fact that I jumped when he touched me. He felt like I wasn’t trying, but he didn’t understand that existing in that house was taking all my willpower. We fought quite a bit, but never in front of the kids. I wasn’t going to do that to them.
"If you think I am letting you get away again you are crazy Rusty Rainer." O said.
I was very familiar with O's stubborn lawyer mode and had never appreciated it being turned on me. This was also the result of skipping over my health issues. "You still have kids living here. I'm not in the right place to live with kids yet. I need some time to adjust to society and get to know them and have them get used to my challenges before I jump right in here."
"This isn't a debate Babe."
"You're right it's not. I'm not ready for the whole lovers and kids things yet and you will just have to wait until I am. I nearly had a panic attack when y'all hugged me. Every time you yell I want to hide in a corner. I'm not ready to live with a family of 6 with a tot. I need time. The kids don't deserve"
"I need you here." O said.
"The kids will be fine. The girls grew up with Paris so they are used to ill parents and Missy is a tough little cuddlebug. We know our kids pretty well." Callie added.
"That doesn't mean I will be fine." I was starting to get frustrated at this point. "Take a good look at me O. I am not the same Rusty you dropped off at the airport almost a decade ago. I'm not saying never, just not right now."
One would hope that they actually listened after that, but alas they did not. In fact they argued with me until I gave in out of exhaustion. O took me back to town to pick up my stuff and a few things for the house so I could move in immediately. When I saw how relieved Az looked when O told her he was moving me to the island I lost whatever will I had left to fight.
"Does Az know?" O asked.
"Yes. I went to Rode's first and then I spent yesterday with Az and Alula, and then figured I should get this over with." I looked at Callie. "You did a great job raising our daughter."
"You did all the hard work."
"Well, that's true, but the other sounded better."
Callie laughed. "Fates I missed you Rusty Rainer."
"I have missed both of you on occasion."
"What happens now?" Callie asked.
I was more than a little relieved that they were jumping topics.
"He's moving in with us of course!"
"I am living with Az and Alula for the time being."

They finally let go after a last squeeze and moved to the couch. Inevitably I ended up in the middle. No matter how much I love these two idiots it felt a lot like being a t-bone steak in between to Rottweilers - I was at risk of being affectionately devoured. I sighed "this is not the easiest topic for me so bare with me. I understand you were told that terrorists took at the bus my team was on and killed everyone. In reality they kidnapped several of us before destroying the bus and then sold us. We were split up and traded to assorted groups. Ultimately the group I ended up with did not treat us well, but they found it amusing enough to keep me alive. A few months back special forces raided the compound where I was being kept looking for someone else and got me out."
"Wait, you were found months ago?! Why didn't anyone tell me?!" O exploded. This was about how I expected him to take the news, but that didn't make anything better. For one I really don't like loud noises and flinched a bit. "My father was contacted and decided not to tell anyone until they were sure I would live. I was in such bad shape the doctors didn't think I would ever survive outside a hospital or even in one for long. He didn’t want Az to lose me twice." I wasn't completely lying to them, but I figured it was best to get them over the initial hump before we delved into the pricklier subjects. "But…" O started. "O the important thing is he's here now." Callie said. "And that you're okay."
I paused. "Okay is a relative term. So many years in captivity did a number on me. Physically and mentally. I am on a ton of meds and am still not totally right. However, the doctors finally agreed that I was capable of surviving living with family so I was released. Imagine my surprise when I discovered everyone but Dad was in Nixieberg." "Rode moved here to be close to Az, and then Alula moved here for Az, and then after Paris died O finally came." Callie said.
O and Callie looked at each other and then ran over and hugged him.
I felt like my heart might beat out of my chest unless O squeezed it out of me first. "Too much closeness. Way to much closeness."
"Rusty you're alive!" Callie said squeezing him harder.
"How is this possible?" O asked.
"If you two will stop squeezing the life out of me and let me sit for a second I'll tell you."
Unsurprisingly Callista hadn't noticed me walk in. She had changed so much since I had last seen her, but she was still my C. "Hello Princess." I finally said.
Callie's facial expressions over the next few minutes were both entertaining and terrifying. "But you're… wait… how… O get out here right now! How are you not dead?"
"The usual way I suspect." I replied as O ran out.
"Babe, but how? You're supposed to be… are you really here?" O bumbled
"Last time I checked. It's a very long and unpleasant story, but I am significantly less dead then previously indicated." I sighed. "If I'm interrupting something I can go"
