A história de "Gump" começa em 1985, quando a produtora Wendy Finerman leu o manuscrito de um desconhecido escritor do Alabama, contando a fantástica história de um homem que participa, ainda que acidentalmente, dos mais importantes fatos da vida política e social dos EUA. Em dezembro do mesmo ano, Finerman, agora ao lado de Wiston Groon, autor do livro, tentava um acordo com a editora Doubleday para levar a história ao cinema. Quem a recebeu naquele dia foi Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, que trabalhava na editora. Cinco anos depois o "Projeto Gump" retorna. Ainda pela vontade de Finerman e da Paramount, que assume o projeto e escolhe Barry Sonnenfeld (de 'A Família Addams') para tocar o filme. Sonnenfeld é quem mostra o livro para Tom Hanks. Mas não é desta vez que "Forrest Gump" sai do papel. Quem abandona projeto agora é Sonnenfeld, convencido a realizar a "Família Addams 2". Entra Robert Zemeckis. Forrest Gump sai, então, das folhas para as telas. E ganha o mundo.
