Fans who ship Rumiko didnt get much of their favorite pairing in Kumiko’s second year at Kitauji High School, popularized in the Hibike! Euphonium movie.

The third season fixes that issue.

We’ve gotten a lot of excellent interactions between our favorite musical wives (and thankfully few from Shun), making this season the most Reina + Kumiko heavy, at least so far. The latest episode also confirmed an interesting part of their relationship dynamic.

From the beginning, we’ve gotten the sense that Reina is the focused, driven and analytical half of the pairing, while Kumiko balances it out with her aloof coolness and approachability. This always made it seem like Kumiko was the one who needed more out of their relationship, but that’s not (and has never been) the case.

Reina needs Kumiko more than Kumiko needs Reina, and Reina shows that by not-so-subtly steering her towards attending a music school after graduation. Reina of course believes in her love’s talent, but her primary motivation is to be close to Kumiko for as long as she can.

That’s really fucking cute. Especially since Kumiko has projected an aloofness that makes her seem okay with any path, even ones that exclude Reina. Some may see that as weak, but in reality it gives her a power and freedom that few could ever attain: The ability to wrap Reina around her calloused finger.
