Wow. You aren't an awful person or a bad owner for letting your cat go outside. We had an outside cat when I was a little girl and he lived past the life span the vet predicted. He died of old age and he spent 80% of his time outside. Cats are pretty smart and if they get hurt, it's not the owners fault. Some cats just prefer the outdoors and shouldn't be forced inside. It's exactly like you said, you wouldn't force your child inside all the time. :/
