Ruby Fun!
So lately for something different I've been playing with Ruby. I've been looking at a couple of different programming tutorials for it, including the "PickAxe" Programming Ruby: Pragmatic Programmer's Guide. And Why's (Poignant) Guide to Ruby. Both are very good resources, if somewhat different extremes of styles of writing. But being an experienced programmer the small trivial examples start to bore me and while I need to learn some of the technical details, for instance the information about blocks in Ruby. Ultimately they started to drag out some.
That's when I came across the Ruby Koans.. Such a fun way to learn Ruby (though definitely more for an experienced programmer than someone with no programming background). And truthfully the ANSI colors remind me so much of playing MUDs back in the day.
To put it very basically.. you're trying to run a program. This program has many components.. and most of them are broken. So you'll receive an error, looking at the code you'll learn how to fix it and also learn some facts about the Ruby language in the process. I'm only part way through at this point. I believe somewhere I saw reference that it took one person approximately 5 hours to complete the whole thing. But that of course will vary with individuals. Either way it's a fun little way to learn the language.
