From the first moments of Brooke Allen's relentless, nonlinear thriller, we're locked in the crazed mind of a traumatized survivor seeking revenge for a past wrong—and we aren't let out until the final second. Every element of James Palmer's brilliantly staged, terrifying Tympanic Theatre Company production amps up the tension: Dustin Pettegrew's dark, chaotic set, Maxwell Shults's horror-show sound design, Chrissy Weisenburger and Charlotte Mae Ellison's inspired yet subdued costumes. A tight, five-member ensemble play every intense beat as if their lives depended on it. All the performances are strong, but Christine Vrem-Ydstie stands out as Ruby Wilder's sweet, pretty, profoundly disturbed sister. —Jack Helbig
Ruby Wilder Trailer (by SusanTympanic)
this is the trailer for the new Tympanic play, which opens next thursday. I did the music, sound design, and dialogue editing. enjoy!
(listen with headphones...there's a lot of low-frequencies that'll be lost on laptop speakers)
there's so much noise inside my head
buzzing fluorescent lights and insects coupled with the sweet pluck of harp strings.
working on this play is really getting to me...it doesn't help that i'm exhausted and sick, but the sound design/score i've developed is so intense that i find myself imagining that i'm a part of that world (as i'm sure the actors do, thus making it effective). i cry every night at rehearsal; three times. three different scenes that strike their own unique chords, all of which resonate in the particular chamber of my heart that seems to trigger tears.
i wish you could all come see this play. if you live in chicago (or will be here during october) please do. it's called "Ruby Wilder" and it's truly beautiful. i will be there, running sound almost every night it's showing.
