I just learned from Gymnastics Queensland that Ruby Pass was recovering from influenza during yesterday's qualifications round, and that she's a "reminder of why young girls across the country should look up to her" for...giving it her all when she was sick.
and the comments are, like, commending her perseverance and saying how incredible it was she competed while sick.
and this just...makes me fucking angry? so very fucking angry. she was sick. she should have been resting and recovering. we tell athletes to take time off for injuries, guess what, physical illnesses count too. there is nothing to be admired in forcing yourself to compete when you feel like utter shit.
I hope Ruby is okay and getting plenty of rest now that her portion of the competition is over...and I hope whoever let her go out onto the competition floor knowing she didn't feel 100% feels absolutely fucking ashamed of themselves.
