Sea Sound
Although I decide to go to the sea on a whim, I don’t know why. If I know the answer in advance, I would not have made efforts to express it in this way. The longer I look out to the horizon, the more lively things around it and living things out of my sight come to life like musical notes.
Is this regrettably because I try to measure the weight of life by means of a stone amid the color of air, humidity in this space, the sound of waves, weeds swaying in the wind, birds, drifting objects, and one’s voice? This exhibition gleans objects from the sea and concentrates on sound, posing questions concerning my identity, the flow of air, and color.
I have listed conscious feelings that come as reactions to accumulated memories and experiences at the time of facing an actual space. Reconstructing A4-size Music Sheet series I executed a few years ago, I draw sound symbols such as colors, forms, diagonal lines, spirals, vertical lines, and horizontal lines on music sheets with a pen with five-ballpoints I made myself as if drawing musical notes.
Pens and paper are applied in my work as tools necessary to communicate with others in my life. I have broadened the territory of my expression to acrylic painting on canvas and object work.
Musical notes on manuscript paper are like a metaphor for something auditory.
On display at the exhibition are Tear Sound (2014) in which paints run on yellow paper torn and suspended in the air and Wave Sound Painting (2018) in which sketches are drawn on paper with pen and paint. Waves are on torn paper on which an enigmatic phrase, “I exist, therefore I am” (존재하기 때문 존재한다) is written. The sound of tearing paper is like the endless roar of the sea.
Waves in the sea, Weeds on the land, Air in the wind, and Birds fluttering their wings ……
Capturing rhythms as if composing a musical piece is an act to share an experience of my aural thinking.
Looking at an object is also to hear its sound. Perhaps, this sound is not from the object itself but from my inner self. The touch of pens and the color of paints are both keen and warm.
“As sound appears, language disappears and waves speak.”
