One thing I've been adding to my TTS fic that I only recently started think about but find interesting is the political ramifications of Frederic keeping the black rocks a secret, as well as the destruction/evacuation of Old Corona. Like, that would be a pretty big deal.
Yeah, we see a lot of Coronans are over it by Season 3, but we only really see the ones in the Capital, not the ones from other villages, who may have very different feelings on the matter.
The gang leaves right after everyone finds out in a high-stakes event where they don't have time to process the information, so we don't see the national reaction that would occur in the following weeks as the news spreads around. The next time we see Corona, it's during Season 3, which is a whole year after the reveal occurred, so people may have processed it by that point. The Saporians had also already taken over, thus changing the political landscape of Corona in general and disrupted any conversations about the whole thing.
But that doesn't mean conversations didn't happen at all. While the majority of Corona seem to live in the capital (probably 60% at most), there's definitely other villages spread out across it, and it's unrealistic for Corona to have all the land they do if that isn't the case.
The outer villages closer to Old Corona are more likely to have been directly affected by the black rocks, and may have wanted a warning. The rocks were dangerous threats people would need to account for safety-wise. They would destroy farmland and thus cause severe economic downturn. If a lot more people had to suddenly evacuate without much warning, it would cause a refugee crisis. Also, an entire fucking village was destroyed. And it was basically covered up.
The people in the capital were clearly against Varian even before the Saporian takeover, but what would other villages similar to Old Corona think? Especially if they heard some of his story/extrapolated some of it based on general facts? Not only were they not told about what happened to Old Corona (as far as we know), which is really important information, but Varian, who attacked the royal family, is the teenage son of the village leader.
If Old Corona's destruction was covered up, then Varian, as the son of the village leader, may have been kept silent, and it's easy to conclude he may have attacked because of what happened to his village and how the king was unhelpful. Not to mention the fact that Varian is a young teen. Do you really thing nobody would have some questions?
Realistically speaking, even if a lot of people throughout the kingdom were really loyal to the royal family, all of this would be a political disaster, and keeping the black rocks a secret (plus covering up stuff regarding Old Corona) would become a massive scandal. Royals and nobility have been in hot water for way less. Frederic would get side-eyed so hard.
Idk, I just think it's really interesting to think about, and I've had fun writing about the potential backlash Frederic would receive from Coronan nobility and various outer villages.

Fandom: Tangled | Tangled the Series | Rapunzelās Tangled Adventure
Summary: Arianna never thought she'd find herself afraid of a fourteen-year-old boy, but the events of Secret of the Sundrop won't seem to leave her.
She needs to talk to Varian in prison. Not for his sake...but for her own.
Character focus: Arianna and Varian
Notes: This is a fic I started writing many many years ago, during the hiatus between seasons 1 and 2. I intended to post it way back then, as a long one-shot. I continued to occasionally work on it over the years, however, it's proven one of the hardest fics I've ever written to edit, (mostly due to the amount of internal monologue).
I finally decided that probably the only way to get it actually edited and posted is to break it up into multiple chapters, despite the fact that it's essentially only one scene, and I feel like that messes with the format. Hopefully it'll help me edit, and end up making it easier for people to read too XD I might post the full version of this, unbroken up, too after I finish it. But I finally got fed up with my editing process and decided this was the only way.
I'm aware that plenty of other people have written Varian and Arianna fics over the years, but at the time I started this there weren't that many yet, and I worked so hard on this, I still wanted to post it, even if others have done things like it. Plus, I'm not sure how many people have written it this heavily from Arianna's perspective.
I hope you all enjoy it, either way! Please don't hesitate to leave a comment to let me know, if so!!
Chapter 1: Fractured Memory
Sun splinters through the castle windows, designing reflections on the newly polished floor.
When she walks into the library, her mouth drops open; The entire room gleams. That Corona sunlight bounces between the tiles, tables, and shelves like a little boy full of energy, laughing as he leaps around the room.Ā
It may be a royal library, but thereās usually still a layer of dust draped over everything, sealing up the gaps, and clogging up the stories. The servants try their best, but itās hard to get into all the crevices between the shelves, the cracks between the pages.Ā
The tiles glitter, the shelves look new, the books donāt cough up dust when she lifts them, even a few of their bindings are mended.Ā
She stays a while to admire it before heading back for her room, and as she does, Arianna smiles, her gait almost dreamyāso like her daughterās.Ā
Who would take such care to polish her library? She appreciates the gesture more than words can express, but she would like to say āthank youā at least.Ā
A curious sight down the hall interrupts her wondering; a laundry cart, moving on its own.Ā
A very full laundry cart, that isā¦Cassandra doesnāt usually fill them so much.
āMay Iā¦help you?ā she walks up to the cart, tilting her head, strands of hair falling to the side.Ā
āOh, no, itās fine! I got this!ā the laundry cart replies.Ā
The ventriloquist reveals himself: a boy steps out from behind it. She guesses he must be one of Rapunzelās friends, since she doesnāt remember seeing him here before, and he doesnāt exactly look like a royal servant, (despite the fact that heās performing one of their jobs).
He pushes back his hairāblack, with a streak of turquoise at the frontāand smooths out his apron. Upon seeing her, his eyes widen with shock.
Ā āOh!ā he stumbles, attempting to bow too low, too quickly, āYour majesty! I-I am so sorry! I didnāt realizeā!ā
She laughs, holding out a hand to steady him.Ā
āDonāt worry. Please. Iām Arianna.ā
āOhāO-Okay. Thatā¦seems to run in the family,ā he mutters beneath his breath. āIām Varian.ā He leans confidently against the laundry cartā¦which starts moving, so he pulls it back with all his strength before it gets out of hand.Ā Ā
āOh! Varian! Rapunzel told me about you!ā
He freezes, his eyes trailing back to her, like people talking about him is usually a bad thing. āSheā¦She has?ā
āOf course!ā she steps closer. āYouāre the alchemist, right?ā
He pauses, blinks, then his face breaks into the biggest grin. He clears his throat, rubbing fake dirt off his gloves, trying to hide his joy, as he looks back up at her. āTen points to the lady in the crown.ā
She smiles.
āAre you here for the completion today?āĀ
He nods. āI think Iāve got a pre-tty good chance of snagging that first prize if I do say so myself,ā he pulls on his apron straps, then pauses, realizing how arrogant that sounds. āNot to uhā¦toot my own horn or anything. But it doesnāt seem like thereās anything like my invention in the running, so I think once Master Doctor St. Croix sees it heāll be impressed! At least I hope so.ā
āWell, if your invention is anything like the ones Rapunzel has told me about youāll have no trouble snagging that blue ribbon.ā
āOh stop,ā he flicks his wrist to wave her off, but is beaming from ear to ear.Ā
She notes that she may be encouraging him a little too much. The experiments Rapunzel has told her about arenāt exactly all blue-ribbon worthy. Or, perhaps they would beā¦if they all worked properly. At the same time, she isnāt sure labelling him as dangerous, and reckless is really fair. She and Willow had tried out their share of inventions, which often failed in a grand array of explosions. If they had worked properly, growing up wouldnāt have been as colorful. At least he was trying his best to help people with his inventions. Without the explosive failures, there was no room for fiery success either.Ā
Ā āWait, shouldnāt you be there with the other contestants now?ā
āOh, yeah.ā He says nonchalantly. āBut I figured since Iām going second-to-last Iāve got a decent amount of time before I have to present. CassiāCassandra has agreed to be my assistant, so Iām helping her out with her lady-in-waiting duties first.ā
āDonāt let her make you do all her work.ā She says in a motherly way. Then gasps, āThe library!āĀ
Ā He winces. āDid I do something wrong? I-I can fix it, donāt worry!ā
āNo, no!ā she puts her hands on his shoulders, āSo you were the one who cleaned it?ā
āYeeesā¦?ā
She pulls him into a hug. āThank you so much.āāhis eyes widen with shockāāIāve never seen the place look so beautiful.ā She releases him.Ā
āOh!ā he rubs the back of his neck and the smile turns sheepish.
āThat must have taken you hours!ā
āIt was no big deal. Nothing a little home-alchemy canāt fix.ā He says like a salesman.
āHow did you do it?ā
āJust a compound of my own invention,ā he digs in his pocket and holds up a little, blue orb between his thumb and forefinger. āMost people donāt understand the more practical uses for alchemy.ā he marches forward, hands on his hips, in a hyperbolic show of pride, making his voice sound deep, āthatās why I make it a mission to show the world the value of alchemy! To boldly go where no man has gone before!ā he laughs, his pose collapsing, āOr something like that.ā
No wonder Rapunzel had such nice things to say about him. There werenāt a lot of people out there who were soā¦genuine. People who cleaned libraries because they needed cleaning, who created solutions for problems simply because they needed fixing.Ā
Ā āMaybe one day you can teach me.ā
āReally?ā He drops the ball and it explodes into a sudsy mess on the already polished floor. āI mean, not that I think a queen should be doing housework! Butā¦really?ā
āPlease,ā she waves him off. āI wasnāt always a queen, you know. If Willow and I had had tricks like this maybe our house would have always looked like a pigsty. Sometimes I think we started going off on adventures just to get away from the smell.ā She leans in closer, whispering behind her hand, āOne time, I set the kitchen on fire trying to bake a birthday cake for Frederic.ā
He laughs, then pauses like he isnāt sure heās allowed to. āI guess not every queen is scared to get her hands dirty, huh?ā
āUh huh,ā she puts her hands on her hips, āYou should have seen the look on his face.ā
āHappy birthday huh?ā
āNow make sure to always send someone to Montyās for his cakeā¦spare us all.ā
He fails to keep himself from laughing again, then pauses.
āWell⦠I really should be getting back to these chores. This laundry isnāt going to clean itself, amIright?ā he bobs his head and walks backwards to the cart. āBut it was really nice talking to you, your MajāI mean,ā he points, āArianna.ā
āLet me help you! This cart is too heavy to carry on your own.ā she rushes over to the other endāheās so thin, sheās afraid heāll snap in two if he does all the chores by himself.
āNo no!ā he comes dangerously close to slapping her hands away. āI mean,ā he smiles nervously, pulling his fingers close to his chest, realizing his outburst to the Queen. āI wouldnāt want you to get yourā¦erā¦royal hands dirtyā¦Right?ā
She smiles.Ā
Well, if a little stubborn.Ā
āAs long as youāre sure.āĀ

*
The scene shifts, smearing like a painting left out in the rain. The reflection becomes more sinister; a glowing tower of amber, and encased within, a man reaching to the sky as if trying to catch rays of sunlight; as if light alone can break himself out of his prison of stained glass. The curtain to this godforsaken show is crumpled at the bottom. A giant machine stands in the middle of the room, made of metal, lightning, and cold, haunting music.Ā
The room smells like sulfur, and rust, and a lot of other chemicals she canāt quite place. Things from the earth which donāt smell natural at all.Ā
The same boy stands before her. The same, and yetā¦not the same at all. Along with the light from the windows, so too has disappeared the light from his eyes. The blue is something akin to moonlight; less the gleam of day, the reflection of the sunrise, full of hope, instead, more an eclipsed glow, shrouded by darkness.Ā
She feels that rusted metal, the cold in his eyes, wrap like icy hands around her ankles.Ā
She looks quizzically from her cuffed ankles to him. Doesnāt the warden usually cuff the prisonerās hands?Ā
He seems to understand her confusion, because he answers her unasked question;
Ā āPlease,ā he scoffs. His eyes meet hers, and he smirks. The words, the smile, no longer contain compassion, they are manufactured with bite and scorn; āI wouldnāt want you to get your royal hands dirty.āĀ
He tugs hard on the chain, showing that itās connected to the labās floor, as if saying to a toddler Youāre stuck here, understand? He walks back over to his deskālittered with bottles, liquid bubbling and seething like his emotions, an array of colors that tell nothing of what they contain.Ā
If the color green is sleep, then what color is death?Ā
She looks up at the golden tower in the center of the room. She doesnāt want to, but she canāt look away.Ā
āLook awayā¦like Frederic did, when people like Varian were crying out for his help against the rocks. Look away, like Rapunzel had to when the storm was coming, and Quirin was being imprisoned. Look away, like they all did after the storm passed.
Ā She still couldnāt believe her husband would, could do something like that. That was the reason she was here, the reason the boy was hurt, the reasonā¦the mistake, the poorly made choice.Ā
No, she couldnāt think that way. Besides, she knew he had his reasons, that he wanted to make sure people didnāt panic, and he wanted to keep Rapunzel safe. It wasnāt his fault he didnāt fully understand the situation.Ā
And she would never blame Rapunzel. Rapunzel had had to make one of the most difficult choices of her life that day, had had to learn too much about being queen, too soon: that it was about choices, and sometimes those choices would be leaving behind the one, for the sake of the many.Ā
And the amber was the other reason, and that wasnāt Fredericās fault...The amber Varian himself had mistakenly made.
Still,Ā it would have been so easy. So easy to come back to him once the storm had ended. So easy...
So where did the fault lie, really?ā
Was it amber? Was amber the color of death? Or just another kind of sleep?Ā
The boyās eyes shift, glaring at her with nothing more than bitterness.Ā
Or was it blue? The color of the moon, a well-timed strike of lightning, an icy landscape. Was blue the color of death?
Ā āWhat are you going to do?āĀ
āYeah,ā he scoffs, āIāll reveal my whole plan to you. Let me go into the tragic backstory of Varian,ā he waves his hand grandly, āThe poor boy, who lost his father to an experiment, a few rocks, a storm, and a princessā broken promise.ā He leans on the desk, resting his cheek in his hand in some mock-loving fashion, his eyes aimed on her like gunfire. āItās simple; Rapunzel broke her promise.ā He stands back up to his full heightāwhich, admittedly, isnāt very high, but itās more impressive from her place on the ground. āI tried asking nicely for her help, and I was denied.ā He jabs a finger on the table to emphasize his point; the first sign of violence. āNow Iām going to askā he smirks, tilting his head to the side, his eyes half-lidded in the dark, ānot so nicely.āĀ
He pauses a moment, glancing at the chemicals on his desk.Ā
āI once said Iād teach you the ways of practical alchemy.ā He reaches forward and takes up a flask. āWell, this isnāt exactly what I had in mind, but I will show you something.ā
He walked over to her, holding the flask full of something green and frothy that smells like dog breath.
Was it green? Was deathās color the same as sleep? The colors of leaves and grass and everything everyone thinks is a sign of life. ...It would be a cruel joke.
āThis is a little solution I like to callā¦Varium.ā Thereās something hurt in his eyes when he says the word. āYou see, when it reacts with the rocks,ā he runs his fingers along the black spire jutting through the wall between themāone could be fooled into thinking in an intrigued way, but there was something harsh in his touch, resentful in his eyes, āit has this tendency toāā he held it over the stones, the liquid trickling slowly downwards in the flask, teasing her breath to catch itself and fall. He turns the bottle upright, and bites his lip, closing his eyes, willing himself not to turn around and look at what this has done before.Ā
What heās done.Ā
āWell, you get the idea,ā he mutters, returning the flask to his desk.
She doesnāt have to ask, and he doesnāt have to finish.Ā
āYou think if you threaten me Rapunzel will work with you?ā thereās a bite to her words.Ā
Ā āTen points to the lady in the crown.āĀ
She pauses as he returns to work, her eyes trailing along the chain, the floor, jumping onto the windowsillāthe rocks interrupting her gaze at every bend and break of the roomāsearching for any way out, any chance at rescue, anything her husband and daughter could use against him.
Was death black? The color everyone thinks it is. The black of these rocks, the low blue glowing beneath them, destroying his home, destroying their hearts, their chances at friendship andā¦It surely seemed like it.Ā
āShe wonāt, you know.ā
He raises an eyebrow as if to say oh, you think?
āRapunzel.ā She tries to urge her confidence, like a stubborn pet, to come out, but it shies away by the second. āShe wonāt help you.ā
He smiles. āYou make your hypotheses, Iāll make mine.ā
āAnd what are yours?ā her own eyes are half lidded.Ā
He thinks over his words. āShe canātā¦help but help. She always had this sick compassion about her.ā After a moment he adds softly, āā¦but only for her kingdom.ā
Anger, injustice, bubble within her chest.Ā
Ā āYou donāt have to be like this, you know.ā
āAnd she didnāt have to break her promise,ā he tilts his head, āya know.ā
She grits her teeth, clenches her fist. āI met you once. What happened to that boy whoāā
He laughs a little, cutting her off. āYeah, well, he learned a couple things about the real world.ā
For a moment, just one brief moment, there is something there. Something in his eyes, a memory, a reaction, like the chemicals. Something real, something lost, something hurt, somethingā¦something not this. Incased within a prison of blueā
Can someone please explain to me what Varian and the Seven Kingdoms is? And, more importantly, send me the link to the start of it so I can get into it?
It was like I hopped on tumblr one day and suddenly everyone knew all about it, it was all anyone in the fandom was talking about, writing about, etc. But I have no clue. Itās an au comic someone created, right? But thereās so much content for it in the tag now, I donāt know where it started, or how to get into it. Can someone please help me out?
While I like some of the Varian Love Interest OCs, I feel like there should be more TTS OCs who just look at him and sayĀ āyes, you are my child now. I am adopting you.ā
So, I just wanted to make a post uplifting some really great fics Iāve read/am subscribed to or still keeping up with. I like to let people know about other creators, and I just wanted to mention some works I think people should check out.

So I made another AU...........that I might not finish.....but I have been working on it for a while, so I am somewhatĀ likely to finish it!
I call this AU the Celestial Garments AU, and it is one of those AUs where I am fine filling it with OCs, but I wonāt ship them with any canon characters, so donāt worry if you arenāt into OC x Canon shipping. This AU is very lore heavy and will slightly change the plot and lore of the OG series while keeping most of it the same.
The premise of this AU is that there is more objects than just the Sundrop and Moonstone. There are also some other items, and all of these are known as the Celestial Garments. The Celestial Garments each individually fell from the heavens and landed on Earth as beautiful yet dangerous items of power. But they werenāt just trinkets; they were beings. Practically godlike in power and mind.Ā
Little is known about their true origins or why they fell, but they are believed to be deities trapped in the mortal realm, or maybe possessions of cosmic deities, possessions that eventually gained sentience upon arriving on Earth. Either way, they became important to the balance of nature, and the world accepted this. Religions and cultures were founded around these celestial beings, and they all grew to enjoy the company of mortals. They also gained close bonds with each other, and all were happy.
But some mortals wished to keep the Celestialsā powers for themselves, and tried to kidnap or steal them. To prevent something terrible from happening, each Celestial chose a warrior to protect them, someone they knew would remain completely loyal and true. Someone who would be an ally, a companion, a friend. And so the Celestial Guardians were chosen. They each gave sacred vows to always keep their Celestial safe and never use their power for personal gain.
After death, each of the Guardiansā souls became connected to the Celestial Garment they protected, and this granted them an immortality of sorts that would allow them to protect their Celestial friend for an eternity.
However, something went terribly wrong. A person known as Zhan Tiri managed to incapacitate the Guardians and the Celestial, turning each of said Celestials into their original Garment forms. When the Guardians came to, some of them couldnāt find their Celestials, as some of those Celestials had run off before transforming, some had been taken after transforming, and others had been accidentally teleported to other lands. The Guardians with the missing Celestial Garments searched and searched, and while a few were able to find their missing friends, others have not yet found them.
Out of those who have, most have chosen to hide away with their Celestial Garments or hid the true identity/origin of the garment, while a few have chosen to keep them as the centerpiece to their kingdom and create small armies to help guard the garment.Ā
While most of the Celestial Garments are still concious, most are still trapped in their Garment form, and can only communicate with their Guardian, other Celestials, and whoever might be wearing said Garment. The Guardian can also translate what their Garment is saying to any who cannot hear them.
Most knowledge about the existence of the Celestial Garments has been lost to time or hidden away, but their are some who still know of it, and the Guardians are still protecting and searching. But new problems just hadĀ to arise, didnāt they?
----
And thatās the basic premise! I shall be adding more stuff to this on my main blog. I might even end up creating a side blog for it, but that depends on if people actually like it and want to see more. Iāll still make stuff for it either way.
Currently working on some later chapters in my TTS fic, and DAMN is Andrew fun to write/work with. For my fic, Iām trying to use the most neutral interpretations of the more dislike/controversial characters. For example, while I love hating on dear old Freddy, I donāt feel like making him cartoonishly evil. Heās a pretty bad person, but not straight up evil. SO I have been going somewhat neutral on their interpretations personality wise.
While some depicting paint Andrew in a somewhat evil light, and others will portray him in a more positive light (though Iām not actual sure if they believe he was legitimately good to Varian), I personally think he was a bit complicated. Which is why itās so fun to write him. I think he did show a bit of kindness to Varian, and in the prison parts of my fic, he will show concern on rare occasions, but I still believe he mainly had ulterior motives and manipulated Varian quite often.Ā
Andrew is by no means a good person or someone who is looking out for Varian, heās very manipulative and easy to annoy most of the time. But itās also fun to make him what I call aĀ āsimplistic bad guyā in which heās character and role arenāt by any means simplistic or inconsiquencial, but he as a bad guy is.Ā Andrew is out to hurt people, yes, but he isnāt quiteĀ a sadist. He wants to kill those who he believe are against his goals (including innocent people), but if someone aināt his target, he wonāt really go out of his way to hurt them. He doesnāt go out of his way to hurt Varian. He manipulates and uses, and what he does is basically grooming (not the sexual kind), but he doesnāt try to do direct harm or damage Varian (the effects of his actions may be damaging, but likely unintentional).
All in all, for my writing, Andrew is an absolutely horrible person, but a more realistic, common kind, the type of abuser who doesnāt really realize they are an abuser. One who acts caring and can be legitimately nice, but is otherwise manipulative and out for personal gain. In fact, the way he treats Varian (at least in my head canon) is a bit like someone we already know:
This bitch
Andrew can be somewhat paralleled to this mf right here. Which is why itās gonna be so fun to write him
