Gen One, Day Sixty-Seven

Johnny was trying to watch football that night and he kept turning the volume up the more and more Robyn got into cleaning up the house. He should have known something was on her mind the minute she started doing the dishes by hand instead of putting them in the dishwasher, but he really wanted to watch the game. 

It wasn’t until she broke out the vacuum and did one round of the house before sighing and starting on her second round that Johnny took real notice. The volume didn’t go any higher on the television anyway and Robyn kept vacuuming in his view of the game, so he flicked it off and as loud as he could, cleared his throat. 

Robyn looked at him, smiled sheepishly and turned the vacuum off. “Bug,” Johnny started, tapping the couch next to him. “Come talk to me.” 

Gen One, Day Sixty-Seven

“Okay, you know what?” Catarina asked, pulling something out of her purse. Robyn raised a brow at the device and the woman who handed it over to her. “We need to consult the cosmics.” 

“Now you sound like Emily,” Robyn told her friend. 

“Where do you think I got this from?” Catarina didn’t take offense and then pointed to the device in Robyn’s hands. “You can ask it a question and it will give you an answer. Ask it. Ask if you should go for the new job.” 

Robyn frowned, looking down at it and while she didn’t truly believe in that sort of stuff, in greater cosmic beings who would guide people along with a gentle hand in their life, the thought of asking this little box to see what it said was...intriguing. Should she go for the job? What if the box said no? Was she really going to listen to it? 

“Should I work towards the new job?” Robyn asked, before putting too much thought into it. She shook up the device and a moment later, the answer was in... 

Only time will tell...

Catarina snickered slightly and Robyn sighed loudly, overdramatically. “Even the cosmics don’t know what to do with me.”

Gen One, Day Sixty-Seven

Robyn had taken her job as Department Head very serious. She’d managed to accomplish a lot with her role on the board. Getting new computers for the school was a big accomplishment. Upgrading to the news versions of software licenses. While it seemed like things that should have been done automatically, she’d learned a lot about the education system and lack of funding the schools got from the very start. 

She thought she’d reached the top of her career, nothing else she really wanted to do with her career, she would be fine retiring as a second grade teacher if this was where she stayed the rest of her life. 

Only then a co-worker mentioned in passing that the principal of the school would be retiring in a few years and Robyn’s name was in the pool for people they thought might make a good internal candidate for the position. Robyn had to remind people that she didn't’ have the appropriate degree for the administrative role. And they reminded her that she was already well on her way with her teaching degree. It would just take a couple years of classes, like getting an Associate’s Degree. 

The thought was tempting for sure.
