For the (cool!) recent Apollo vs. Dionysos epithet thing…
Why is Dio called “hymeneal”? Doesn’t that have to do w/weddings, which is Hera’s (or Hymenaios’s) domain?
Is calling Dion “yellow-haired” just a reference to his general affinity, or a characteristic he was thought to physically possess?
If “hierophant” refers to divination, shouldn’t that be 1 of Apollo’s epithets, instead of Dio’s?
What does it mean by (in both stanzas) “thousand-shaped”? Are they shaped by thousands of years (old), able to shapeshift (like when Zeus was a swan for Leda), etc.?
Lastly, it was mentioned on the reposts but I don’t understand why Apollo’s called a Titan. I know that a lot of basic mythology classes incorrectly teach that Apollo & Helios share the same duties, not that they’re the same person.
Thanks, hope you’re well!
I'm good :3 thank you!
1) I'm not entirely sure. He's not a god primarily associated with weddings, like you said. But maybe it could fall under him as it is a celebration after all? Hymenaeus is Dionysus' son as well, in one account.
2) I have seen him being called golden haired by Hesoid. But Homer gives him dark hair. In this hymn the word used to describe the hair is Xanthos, which is most commonly translated as blonde, apparently. But I don't know much about this yet.
3) Hierophant is more of a priest, than a prophet right? That would make complete sense for Dionysus then, as he is seen as the god who resides over mystic rites.
4) I'm sure it refers to their shapeshifting ability.
5) Syncretism and identification of Apollo with the sun has been there since at least 500 BC, only the extent depended on the author/region. Some poets called Apollo the sun itself. But I have to admit, this is one of the very few times I'm seeing him being called a Titan (otherwise that's used for Helios), the only other text being Orphic hymn to Apollo (even Artemis is called a Titan in the Orphic hymn). So my guess is either this author completely confounded Helios and Apollo, or maybe Apollo is called a titan to show that he is really powerful.
