The Most Beautiful Sight In Video Games.
Okay, so i’m being a little hyperbolic on this one, Oblivion has aged pretty harshly in the area of....well in all areas, but especially in graphical fidelity. Still, walking out of the sewers to see this is burned into my brain as one of the most impressive sights a video game has ever given us. It’s not like video games hadn’t featured large open worlds before, hell it’s the fourth time Elder Scrolls as a series did it, but for me it was the very first time a video game felt less like a playable area and more like a world that existed only in my Xbox 360. Where do you even go? You can just go anywhere? Do you investigate that ruin? Those mountainside woods could hold all sorts of secrets. There’s a series of rolling hills off to the right, there could be any manner of interesting sights up there. Are you feeling really bold? Todd did once say “You see that mountain? You can go to it” (Okay, so he said this years later, but it applies). Point is I’ve not been hit as hard with an initial introduction to a game world as I was in Elder Scrolls Oblivion, and I just thought it’d be nice to share that. Does anyone else share this memory with me? A similar memory of a different game? I’d love to hear about them!
