I might die young, I might die old, but I will never die of boredom.

#1687: “In 1966 a former British major named Roy Bates moved, with his wife and son, to a 10-by-25 foot cement caisson built 7 miles off the British coast during World War II. Bates named the platform "Sealand," declared it to be an independent country, crowned himself king and his wife queen, issued postage stamps, designed passports, and even created a Sealand dollar. Today Sealand is the world's smallest country and King Roy still reigns. Since they are beyond the 3-mile limit, Bates and his kingdom are outside the jurisdiction of any other country.”
Inaccurate. True. Times have changed.
Paddy Roy Bates occupied Sealand in 1967. The next year, when British workmen entered Sealand’s territorial waters for some repair work, Bates’ son Michael scared them off with some shots. The court ruled that since the platform was over 3 miles away from the British coast, it had no British jurisdiction and could be counted as a micronation. In 1975, Bates rolled with it and made passports, a constitution, a flag, a national anthem, and money.
Sealand is not officially a country, but it’s one of many micronations. Sadly, Bates no longer rules as Prince of Sealand, having passed away in 2012 after having Alzheimer’s for several years, but his son Michael has ruled since 1999. A two-bedroom, one-bathroom Royal Palace was built on Sealand in 2007.

Roy Bates and His Dog Named Taffy— ahh Paddy
Roy Bates owned a spectacular Airedale dog. He was the pride and joy of the family, and Pat or Paddy as he was called, would follow his master every day to his office at the Bates and Innesmill. One morning on their daily walk, the Airedale came across a ball of taffy on a plate cooling on a back step. The dog had no idea it had to be fully cooled and needed to be pulled. He didn’t think twice,…

Roy Bates
B. 1921 | By WILLY STALEY
THE SMALLEST COUP D’ÉTAT IN HISTORY took place on a 6,000-square-foot outpost near the mouth of the Thames, built by the British during World War II as an antiaircraft platform. In 1966, a former British Army major and pirate-radio operator, Roy Bates, laid claim to the platform, intending to use its location in international waters as the base for a pirate-radio station. The next year, he declared the platform its own nation, making his wife, Joan, a princess. The Principality of Sealand minted coins and stamps and even issued passports. But just 12 years after he founded it, Prince Roy’s nation would be taken from him by business associates.
A German named Alexander Achenbach connected Bates with a group of businessmen interested in building a casino on the platform. In August 1978, Achenbach lured Prince Roy and Princess Joan away from Sealand for a meeting in Austria, leaving their 26-year-old son, Prince Michael, to run the tiny nation by himself. Soon, a group of German and Dutch businessmen descended on Sealand by helicopter, brandishing a telex indicating that the casino deal had gone through. (It hadn’t.) Achenbach had apparently orchestrated the whole charade. Michael was held hostage for three days then dumped on a Dutch fishing boat.
One of Bates’s usurpers, a German lawyer named Gernot Putz, had a Sealand passport, and was therefore both a citizen and a traitor. This technicality turned a tiny coup into a minor international dust-up when Roy and his family reunited to launch a counterassault to take back their home. Sealand earned its sovereignty in the process. Well, sort of.

Prince Roy of Sealand
It seems hard to believe it was a year ago today that my Dad passed away. We shall be raising a glass to him tonight.
As a young soldier he was bitten by a snake in Iraq; he attempted to cut out the poison with a razor blade and then drank a bottle of whisky. Everything we are told not to do these days in such circumstances!
In later life he always kept a bottle of whisky in the house and his excuse:
“You never quite know when you might get bitten by a snake”
Miss you Dad.
-Michael of Sealand
The Principality of Sealand: Claimed to be a sovereign nation in international waters but in fact an unrecognised entity. Originally a World War 2 sea fortress it was abandoned in the 1950's and later occupied by the self crowned Prince Roy Bates in 1967. He established the nation in 1975 with the writing of its own constitution and begining the mintage of its own coins. Bates moved to mainland Essex when he became elderly, naming his son Michael regent. Bates died in 2012 at the age of 91.
