them! juniper is ranting about fishing or smth :]
[ID: A digital drawing of the characters Juniper Sloan and Rowan Chow from camp here and there. Juniper is leaning against Rowan, with his left arm raised as though he is explaining something. His hair is red, and his eyes are slightly turquoise blue. Rowan’s left arm is leaning on Juniper’s shoulder, and he is looking at Juniper and smiling peacefully. His hair is dark black-brown and tied up similar to a bun, with some hair also on his shoulder. Rowan is wearing a dull green sweater with the sleeves pulled up to his elbows, and he has two bracelets on his left arm, they are blueish green and dark blue. Juniper is wearing a blue tinged white collared shirt over a dull green shirt. They both have a slight cartoonish blush. End ID]
I really like how FILE 20 examines the parallels between Sydney and Jedediah's relationship vs Rowan and Juniper's relationship. And I think it can all be boiled down to love languages:
Juniper's love language is kind words, so he compliments Rowan up and down to show how much he values their relationship. But, Rowan's love language is inclined more towards gift-giving and quality time. So, by complimenting him left and right but not doing anything for him, Juniper comes off as, and is definitely being manipulative towards Rowan, albeit unintentionally. They talk it out during their mediation session, set some boundaries and share their feelings, and decide to wait and see of the boundaries are respected, hence Rowan's semi-ending line of "I'll believe it when I see it"(a line I particularly like, as it doesn't immediately let Juniper off the hook and instead puts the ball in his court to decide how the relationship proceeds or whether it proceeds at all).
Now let's see how this can be applied to Jedediah and Sydney's relationship:
Sydney's love language is quality time and kind words, so he invites Jedediah to play chess with him and speaks highly of him. Jedediah's love language is gifting/doing things for others. It is implied that Jedediah's 'project' has to do with Sydney's wellbeing, so by putting his energy into the project, he is showing his love to Sydney. But, by not communicating this to him, it makes Sydney feel like Jedediah loves the project more than he loves him. There is a clear miscommunication that Sydney attempts to address multiple times, by withholding the package and asking Jedediah what is inside, to talk to him. But Jedediah does not budge and refuses to communicate, and is on the verge of entirely losing Sydney as a result.
So the moral of the story is: COMMUNICATE. WITH. YOUR. LOVED. ONES.
Have a great day!
