Summary: Flyingâs always terrified you, but when you were with Bradley, you just felt soâŚSafe. You werenât calm, per se, but his reassuring words and kind encouragement had kept you from spiraling into a panic attack. With one week of your two week detachment down, part of you worries that youâll never get to spend time with him.Â
Itâs been a weekâa week of catching glimpses of Bradley in hallways, and across rooms. Itâs been a torment. Itâs been worse still when heâs caught your eye; when heâs smiled and winked at you as youâve each gone on your way. When you have a moment of downtimeâwhen your work is quiet enough, or youâve gone quiet among your fellow engineers during a meal, or when youâve had trouble falling asleepâyouâve remembered the weight of his hand in yours, and the nestle of your body against his while you were on the plane.Â

--Â Â
Itâs in passingâitâs risky, and you want to scold him for itâbut youâre too busy trying not to giggle like a schoolgirl as Bradley grips your hand and tugs you around a quiet corner.Â
âI was on my way to a meeting, you know,â You tell him as officiously as you can.Â
âYouâre still on your way to a meeting.â He peers around the corner warily. âYouâre just going to be a minute late, is all.â He leans back against the wall, eyes sweeping you. You feel a little exposed as he does, despite the fact that you are neatly, pristinely uniformed. His hand still holds to yours, swinging them back and forth just a touch between you.Â
âYou doinâ anything tonight?â He presses. You consider it. You have two meetings toward the end of the day, and both are likely to run over. Beyond thatânothing.Â
âNot after seven,â You offer. Itâs honestly later than they may keep youâbut youâll have time to get changed if you pad the time a little.Â
âAlright.âÂ
âWhatâs the plan?âÂ
Bradleyâs brows raise at the question, his head tipping forward just a touch.Â
âThe plan?â He repeats.Â
âUh-huh.âÂ
âYouâve gotta have a plan to go out with someone?âÂ
The teasing tone of the question catches you off-guard. You flounder with your answer for a moment.Â
âIâWell, thatâs the whole âplanâ part of making a plan, right?â You ask.Â
âHave you ever gone out with someone without having a plan?âÂ
Your mouth works wordlessly, brow furrowing. âIââŚI mean, I guess we could, butââÂ
âBut you clearly havenât before,â He laughs. âLook at you, youâre short-circuiting at the thought.âÂ
You scowl a touch, eyes narrowing.Â
âIâm already late, lieutenant.âÂ
âOo, whipping out the rank. I am in trouble,â His smile widens. The tease melts you just a little, and you huff a little, glancing around the corner.Â
âBradley.â
âYou meet me back here at seven, then,â Bradley straightens up.Â
âIs it going to take you that long to form a plan?âÂ
He just raises your hand, brushing a tender kiss to your knuckles. The action makes your stomach flutter. His lips are warm, and soft; the prickle of his mustache isnât unpleasant, as you thought it might be.Â
âGo on,â He murmurs, nodding over his shoulder as he lowers your hand. âYouâll be late.âÂ
You huff, pulling your hand from his, grumbling, âI am already.âÂ
You get only a couple of steps away before you feel a light thwack against your backside. You squeak, whirling around and facing Bradley, mouth wide in shock. He just grins, taking a few steps backward and winking before turning away. You start to take a step forward, eyeing his ass through his jumpsuit. If youâre quick enough, you couldâ
You turn as you hear your name called further down the hall, and spot one of your teammates waiting for you. Shit. Did anyone see you? How could forget yourself like that? You glance after Bradley one more time before jogging toward them.Â
âSorry,â You excuse as you catch up to your fellow officer. âI was umâI had the wrong room.âÂ
--Â
âGoddamn.âÂ
Itâs out of Bradleyâs mouth before he can stop it. He sees her falter in her step. He straightens up before she can backpedal, tacking on, âYou look amazing.â
He can see her nerves flaring up, but thereâs a bashful smile on her face as she dips her head from his gaze. He reaches out, taking hold of her hand and drawing her closer. He glances up and down the hall again, ensuring that no one is there before he dips in. Butâ
âNot here.âÂ
Her mutter is nervous. Bradley bites his lip. He canât blame her. He shouldnât have even done that this afternoon. The halls had been empty, sure, and theyâd gotten luckyâbut they may not get so lucky again.Â
âAlright,â He murmurs, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. âCâmon.âÂ
He leads her out of her parking lot, holding his car door open for her. He waits for her to climb in before he rounds the car with a half-jog. He gets in and gets comfortable, reading to put his key in the ignition. Before he can, she mumbles, âIâm sorryâAbout the hallâI mean, just now.âÂ
Bradley turns to her, brows raising in surprise. Sheâs gazing down at her lap; her nervous hands are scrubbing over the fabric of her pants. He knows now that that doesn't mean anything but trouble.
âItâs alright.â
âItâs not that I didnât want you toâI mean, just in there, withâWith who my dad is, and what I doâand what you doâŚâÂ
He lets her speak, and watches as she trails off. Bradley leans over and pressing a tender kiss to her cheek. He feels her smile.Â
âItâs alright,â He gently reassures her again. âI get it. I wasnât offended.âÂ
She turns her head toward him as he leans away, seeming to relax.Â
âSo?â She asks softly. âHave you worked out a plan?âÂ
Bradley grins, reaching for the key in the ignition and turning it.Â
âNo I have not. Tonight, weâre gonna wing it.âÂ
--Â
Winging it isnât so bad.Â
At least, winging it with Bradley isnât so bad. You end up going to a roller rink that you spot as he's drivingâsomething that you havenât done since you were a little kid. You fall flat on your ass at least three times, but it always wells up laughter instead of embarrassmentâespecially the final instance, when you and Bradley tumble down together. Your laughing before youâre even on the floor, and itâs doubled as Bradleyâs legs become tangled with yours, and he lands right beside you, stunned and wide-eyed.Â
âYou think this is funny?â He asks, his own voice thick with laughter that heâs trying to hold back.Â
âNo,â You giggle, âI think this is fucking hilarious.â
--Â Â
âIâm surprised you can still sit down.âÂ
You grin at Bradleyâs faux-grumble. He's pulling up his seat beside yours at the bar of the Hard Deck.
âWhyâs that?â You ask, glancing up from the email youâre replying to.Â
âBetween my hand and the floor, youâve gotten quite the beating today.âÂ
âYou didnât hit me that hard this morning.âÂ
âOh, well. That can be fixed.âÂ
You shoot Bradley a chastising look before you move to set your phone on the bar.Â
âAh-ah,â Bradley warns. âI wouldnât.âÂ
You frown, brow furrowing. âWhy not?âÂ
âYou wanna buy the whole bar a drink?âÂ
You glance from Bradley to a sign behind the bar, then over to where Penny is waiting expectantly. You slap a smile onto your face, sliding your phone into your pocket.Â
âWise choice,â Penny nods as she comes over, bracing her hands on the bar. âWhat can I get you two?âÂ
âIâll take the special again, if itâs still on, please,â You answer first.
âIt is!âÂ
âTwo. Thanks, Penny.âÂ
âSure thing, Rooster.âÂ
You smile at the use of his callsign. Itâs hardly the first time youâve heard it; youâve heard it muttered now and again over the past week, but you didnât always know who people had been talking about.Â
âWhat was that about?â Bradley asks, nodding to your pocket.Â
âHm? Oh, just a diagnostic. I have them running every hour for the next few weeks, just to make sure the systemâs running like itâs supposed to.âÂ
Bradley nods, searching your face curiously. Your brow furrows a touch at the expression.Â
âWhat is it?â You ask.Â
â...Nothin,â Bradley shakes his head. The two of you glance up as Penny sets your glasses down.
âThank you,â You reach into your pocket.Â
âDon't even think about it,â Bradley tuts as he reaches into his.
âNo, câmon. You paid for the skates.âÂ
âSkates?â Pennyâs brows raise as she glances between the two of you. She smiles widely as you each fumble for your wallets, trying to get them out and pay before the other. You manage first, lightly kicking Bradley in the shin as he whacks at your wrist.Â
âWe went to a roller rink,â Bradley answers, though thereâs a pout on his face as Penny takes your card.Â
âI wouldâve paid to see that,â She says, taking a step back. âShould I start a tab?â
âYes pleaaaaase,â You smile before turning to face Bradley again. Heâs still poutingâand quite cutely, too.Â
âCâmon,â You reach out, nudging his shoulder. âNow weâre even.âÂ
âI wasnât worried about that.âÂ
âWell, now Iâm not, either.âÂ
âWeâre switching off per-round,â He warns.Â
âNow, câmon. Why would you make more work for Penny?â You add.Â
âYeah, Bradshaw. Why would you make more work for me?âÂ
You grin as Penny gives you a conspiratorial wink.Â
âI do not appreciate being ganged up on,â Bradley argues, glancing between the two of you.Â
âAlright,â Penny concedes, turning away. âSheâs got this one, anyway.âÂ
You chuckle as she goes, resting your elbow on the bar as you reach for your drink.Â
âI like her.âÂ
--Â Â
âYou sure youâre not cold?âÂ
âIâm not now,â You say, tightening Bradleyâs jacket around your shoulders. You budge up a little closer to him regardless, peering out over the dark water. With the inside of the bar getting busier and busier, you and Bradley relocated to the bench outside with a fresh round of drinks. Bradley grunts, curling his arm around your shoulders and cuddling you closer. The ease of it sends a little shiver through youâone that Bradley mistakes for cold.Â
âWe can go back inside,â He offers.Â
âIâm alright,â You insist. âI just need a minute to adjust.âÂ
You reach out, taking a sip from your glass before setting it back down. The alcohol warms you, just a bit.Â
â...Can I ask you something?â Bradley hedges carefully. You glance up at him, nodding. He bites his lip, eyes searching your face. He seems to have trouble choosing his words.Â
âWith your dad beingâŚWho he is,â He finally says, âWhy do you hate flying so much?âÂ
You bite your lip, looking down at the table. The answer makes your stomach churn.Â
âI meanâŚâ You draw in a deep breath. âWhat you guys do is dangerous. I used to worry when I was younger that every time I saw him would be the last time. AndâŚâÂ
â...We donât have to talk about this,â Bradley offers, giving your shoulder a gentle squeeze. âWe can forget I asked.âÂ
âNo, itâs okay,â You shake your head. âWhen I was six years old, we were moving to a new base. My dad knew the pilotâa commercial pilot that had dropped from the Navy. She offered to show me the cockpit while we were up. My dad stayed back in the seats as the flight attendant took me upâŚThe amount of buttons and switches alone scared the shit outta me, butâŚThe clouds, the skyâŚIt looked amazing. It was like being a dreamâŚâÂ
You can feel it nowâthe slight tip of the plane floor beneath your feet; the scratchy fabric of the sweater that your parents had insisted you wear to keep you warm during the flight; the thudding of your heart as you peered over a sun-splashed sky.Â
You swallow thickly.Â
âIt wasâŚIt was really fucking cool, actually,â You laugh a little. âAnd then we hit a patch of clear air turbulence, andâI mean, I wasnât holding onto anything, no one was holding onto me. There werenât any warning signs, so I justâI went flying. So to speak.âÂ
You go quiet for a moment, trying to quell the nervous feeling in your stomach, even as Bradley rubs your arm gently.Â
âIt scared the shit outta me,â You admit, though youâre certain he knows that already. âAnd it made the idea of what my dad did even more frightening. I mean, he can brace for every single possibility and still just getâFuckinâ slammed out of nowhere, with no warning.â You reach out, swirling your drink with your straw. âFrickinâ hate flying now,â You mutter. âThe next time my parents tried to get me on a plane, I screamed myself hoarse. They had to take me on a train, or drive wherever we were goingâor sedate me.âÂ
Bradley doesnât answer for a few moments. You canât imagine what if heâs thinkingâthat itâs some silly childhood fear, one that you canât shake? But his grip tightens on you, his hand smoothing up and down, warming you through his jacket.Â
âIâm so sorry,â He murmurs. He sounds like he means it, too.Â
âSâokay,â You mumble. âIt was a long time ago. I should be over it, butââÂ
âHey,â He soothes, raising a hand to cup your cheek, turning your head toward his. âAn experience like thatâs gonna change you. Thereâs nothing wrong with that. And itâs not like itâs keeping you from getting on planes these days. You may not like it, but you do it. Thatâs more than some people can say. Youâre not letting fear ground you.âÂ
You smile gratefully at Bradley as the panicked feeling in your stomach ebbs.Â
â...It helps when I have a good seat partner,â You murmur. Bradleyâs smile widens. He leans in, gently resting his forehead against yours.Â
âA good seat partner that gives you all his sun chips?âÂ
You laugh loudly, unable to help it as you nod.Â
"You couldâve had your own sun chips!â You insist. âYou didnât wake me up!âÂ
âYouâd just fallen asleep!âÂ
âI couldâve handled being woken up.â
âWell I know that now. Hindsight is twenty-twenty.âÂ
You grin, reaching up, resting your hand gently on his forearm.Â
âCould also bring your own sun chips,â You mutter.Â
âAlright, we need to stop talking about sun chips.âÂ
âAre you getting hungry?âÂ
âA little.âÂ
Well,â You lean back to get a better look at him, âWe could go get a super later dinner, or a midnight-snack kinda thing. I know where thereâs a good late night food truck. Where they usually post up around now is walkable from here.âÂ
âCareful, sweetheart,â Bradley warns, lips curling into an encouraging smile. âItâs starting to sound an awful lot like youâre winging it.âÂ
--Â
âHoly fuck,â Bradley mutters around a mouthful. You grin, reaching up and gently brushing away a stray piece of shredding lettuce thatâs stuck to his cheek.Â
âHave I got something?â He frowns, reaching up and brushing against the same spot.Â
âYou did,â You confirm, leaning back against the building that the food truck is parked in front of. You reach out, plucking a piece of chicken out of Bradleyâs taco, popping it into your mouth and sucking the bit of hot sauce off of your fingers. You donât mean anything by itâreally, you donât. But when you meet Bradleyâs gaze again, you find his eyes glued to your lips. You let your tongue flicker across your lips again, and heat bolts through your belly as Bradley swallows thickly. You clear your throat before nodding up to Bradleyâs taco.Â
âGood?â You ask.Â
âSo good,â He mumbles. He leans against the building beside you as you raise your burrito for a bite. You hold it up questioningly, and Bradley leans in, taking a biteâand nearly taking a bit of paper with him. You giggle, reaching up and pushing the paper down.Â
âCareful. Almost got an extra bit of fiber there,â You tease.Â
âI donât think thatâs how that works.âÂ
You smile as Bradley steps closer, tightening the collar of his jacket around you.Â
âDid I get something on it?â You ask, glancing toward it.Â
âNn-nnâŚLooks good on you.âÂ
Your face goes hot with the compliment. Heâs so comfortable giving themâhe drops them like theyâre absolutely nothing. Youâre not sure if he can tell how worked up they get you. If he canât, youâre lucky. If he can and heâs doing this on purposeâwell, youâre fucked.Â
âYou look good without it,â You offerâand regret it immediately. When you meet his eye again, Bradley is grinning.Â
âI look even better with a lot less than this, sweetheart.âÂ
âI bet.âÂ
Ohâgod. What is it about this man that loosens your tongue? But Bradley doesnât seem to mind. On the contrary, his grin widens, and he takes a step closer.Â
âHow much are you willing to bet?âÂ
--Â Â
You have never found the backseat of a car so crowded. Bradley practically chases you into it as you scooch back against the far door. Youâre already shrugging his jacket off as he shoves it from your shoulders. It gets caught around your elbows as you reach for him, hands fisting in his t-shirt. Bradleyâs nose brushes yours; his breath warms your lips. Your eyes drift over his faceâdown, then up again. Your eyelids lower as you part your lips just a touch. The tips of your tongue meet, and you groan softly as Bradleyâs tongue spears past your lips. You lower your hands and manage to shake the jacket off, curling your arms around his shoulders and slipping a hand up into his hair.Â
He grips at your thighs, drawing you down under him. Your neck cranes awkwardly against the arm rest, but youâll damn the ache tomorrow. For now, you just focus on Bradleyâon the slip of his lips, and the press of his body, and the warmth of his arms. Â
