Researching words for Book Reasons keeps getting me in trouble because I'll start out with the question "is a hearse a thing that works in a world with a vaguely 1400s european level of technology and cultural development?"
and wind up with the answer "I have to invent a new word for this acceptable object because before hearses got wheels they were a part of funerary rites that have no reasonable allegory in the fantasy religion I made up. So for now these characters will discuss the path that the [xx corpse transporter xx] will take" and I am no closer to actually putting a word in that spot.

have the next 1k words of this, since idk when iâll find the mental energy to write againÂ
âI, uh, I⊠I think youâre in the wrong suite.âÂ
Em purses his lips doubtfully, instantly turning the tips of Colsonâs ears molten hot.Â
âUnlikely. I had this shit booked six months ago.âÂ
Colson doesnât know how Em can sound so calm under these conditions.Â
âWait, so am I - â
âYou might wanna double-check, yeah.âÂ
âFuck, okay, sorry,â Colson stammers, hiking the strap of his messenger bag more securely over his shoulder, and turning for the door again. âIâll go call my - â
âYou can hang out in here for a minute,â Em interrupts, waving a hand reassuringly when Colson stares at him some more, âwhile you figure it out. You lookâŠâÂ
Em gives Colson a slow once-over that makes the hair on his arms stand up. He is brutally confronted with the reminder of how unkempt he currently is; dressed in baggy pajama bottoms and a denim jacket that itches at his chest and armpits, hair dirty and tangled under his snapback, very possibly reeking of B.O. and unquestionably reeking of weed.
God, Iâm disgusting.
Why did it have to be today, of all days for them to unwittingly stumble into each other? Why did Em have to look fucking delicious when it happened? Colson has already accepted that the mental picture will torture him for nights upon nights, long after Em inevitably forgets that they just so happened to cross each otherâs paths on a random day in the middle of June.Â
ââŠtired,â Em finishes at last, making Colson wince.Â
Colson is about to open his mouth to reject the offer, to tell Em exactly where he can shove his pity, when his stomach cuts him off with a very audible growl. Blushing furiously and avoiding eye contact, Colson starts talking just to fill the resulting silence. âI had, like, a rough fuckinâ morning. Iâm not usually so - I mean, if you ran into me literally any other time, Iâd be - â
âSkipped breakfast?âÂ
The tone of the question is neutral, impassive. But that canât be right, because Colson remembers how heated Em used to get when Colson would forget to eat; surviving for days at a time on nothing but caffeine, electrolyte water, fistfuls of dry cereal, and avocado toast.
Youâre not his problem anymore, Colson reminds himself, familiar regrets burning the back of his throat.Â
âYeah,â he answers, quiet and somber, his head bowed as if heâs subconsciously waiting to be told off.Â
âSit,â Em prompts, still sounding neutral. âYou can have whatever you want from the pantry.Â
âThatâs okay, I can - â
âKells.âÂ
Thereâs a flash of the Em Colson had known, then, the unspoken command in his voice triggering Colsonâs long-forgotten compulsion to please him. He obeys in a daze, dropping his bag to the floor and taking a seat on the couch, waiting.Â
Em presents him with a granola bar and a Diet Coke, saying, âYou should order some real food, when you know where youâre supposed to be.âÂ
Colson emits a vague grumble of assent, tearing open the granola bar and taking a bite. He might as well be a wayward traveler on the brink of starvation, for the way he wolfs the rest of it down like itâs the best thing heâs ever tasted.Â
âSkipped dinner, too,â Em says casually, hitting the nail right on the head.Â
âWhat else you got in here?â Colson asks, partly to avoid acknowledging that comment and partly because his stomach is officially running the show.Â
Colson attempts to solve his suite mishap over the phone while he and Em share pretzels and kettle chips. Itâs hard for him to focus with Emâs curious eyes on him, and their hands occasionally brushing when they reach for the snacks on the coffee table at the same time. Colson keeps fumbling his words, trailing into faded uh-huhs as his travel agent chatters intently in his ear and his brain anchors itself to the faint blue-green veins snaking through the underside of Emâs pale wrist.Â
âSo?â Em asks when Colson hangs up, lifting his chin expectantly.Â
Colson swallows, struggling to make sense of the details. âI guess my, uh, my membership expired? And nobody realized? I definitely donât have a suite booked for today, though, so I gotta find a hotel near - â
âHotel,â Em repeats, frowning thoughtfully. âIf the wait is that long, why wouldnât you just go home and come back?âÂ
âOh. I actually donât⊠I live in Cleveland now.âÂ
Em looks genuinely shocked to hear this, his eyes widening. Colson wonders what heâs thinking, wonders if he too is recalling old arguments theyâd had about their respective living arrangements. Theyâd been constantly pulled in opposite directions, torn between two cities and two lifestyles.Â
âYouâre half an hour away from me by plane,â Em points out.Â
âYup,â Colson says, sort of miserably. Heâd thought about it often.Â
âWoulda been nice, whenâŠâÂ
âYup.âÂ
Em looks like he wants to probe further into this discovery, but changes the subject instead.Â
âWhy donât you have a hotel room already booked?âÂ
Colson sighs, frustrated by the unrelenting series of challenges the day has brought him. âMy whole teamâs in the air right now, and thereâs some bullshit I need to work out with them for the booking to go through.âÂ
Colson pauses, his face twisting with displeasure at his next thought. âGuess I got no choice but the public terminals. Iâll get Shake Shack, power-nap in a bathroom stall⊠just like old times.âÂ
âYou know goddamn fucking well Iâm not lettinâ you do that,â Em says, surprisingly emphatic.Â
Colson smiles despite himself, secretly thrilled to have caught another flash of his Em.Â
âDonât worry, Iâll wipe everything down before I touch it. Just like you taught me.âÂ
Em shakes his head. âYouâre obviously hung over, practically malnourished, all by yourself⊠You think Iâm just gonna release you to the swarm of iPhone cameras out there?âÂ
âSo fuckinâ bossy,â Colson says, a stab of irritation loosening his tongue. âI can do whatever the fuck I want. You ainât - â
He stops. What had he even been about to say? Colson shudders inwardly, marveling at how easy it still is for the two of them to don the mannerisms and motivations of their former selves. Is it any wonder they kept breaking up and getting back together; before their final, irrevocable split?Â
âYouâre right,â Em says, gentling his tone and making Colsonâs heart turn over. âIâm askinâ you, as a favor to me, will you stay?âÂ
Those words in Emâs mouth come perilously close to fulfilling a far-fetched dream Colson had let slip through his fingers years ago; so close that he panics, dizzy with yearning.Â
âYes.âÂ
----------------------------------
Kells returns from his excessively lengthy shower looking like a new man, pink-cheeked and fragrant. The outfit heâd assembled from the limited options in his carry-on achieves that tricky balance between showy and effortless that he had always been so good at.Â
Marshall examines Kells anew, distracted from his mission of holding himself at a professional distance. Heâs wearing a short-sleeved, cream silk blouse that hangs open over his naked torso; and fitted tan joggers covered in illegible scrawls of handwritten white text. Heâs collected more piercings over the years theyâve been apart; silver rings gleaming at his septum and presiding over his cluttered assortment of dangly earrings, tiny diamonds embedded below his right eye and at the upper left corner of his mouth. The tattoos, of course, are a lost cause - an always-evolving mass that Marshall couldnât keep up with even when they were dating. His hair, blow-dried into a controlled mess, is dyed a dark silver; a striking departure from the various shades of blond or pink heâd once favored.Â
Marshall continues to steal indulgent glances at Kells while heâs busy ordering more entrees than heâll be able to eat for lunch; noting the anxious bounce of his leg, and the intensifying rosiness of his skin, and the stare that he determinedly pins to a random point on the wall across from them. Nervous around him, after all this time. Marshall doesnât quite know how to feel about it; until he recognizes pleasure unfurling in the forsaken, boarded-up window to his psyche; and is abruptly brimming with fresh resolve.Â
âHowâs the girlfriend?â He asks, the very second Kells is done placing his overzealous lunch order.Â
Kells fixes him with a startled grimace, silently processing the question for a moment. âWhichâŠâÂ
Marshall could laugh out loud.Â
Which one?Â
Typical Kells.Â
There is an unfortunate pinprick of relief beneath the ripple of distaste, but Marshall is ready to course-correct.Â
âYour tabloid co-star,â Marshall clarifies. He doesnât add of the month, though the temptation is strong.Â
Kells bites his lip. âUmm. Weâre kinda, like. Engaged.âÂ
âShit,â Marshall says, like this is new information, âCongrats.â
A smile splits Marshallâs face without warning, and he says, automatically, âAre you propositioning me?âÂ
Kells is immediately on the defensive. âWhat? No! Why would you even⊠â He covers his mouth with one large palm, his face glowing red between his fingers. âShut up,â he concludes weakly, hand inching up to hide his eyes too.Â
Wrong move, Marshall chides himself. Kells is inadvertently softening him up; taking him back to the very early nights, when theyâd both been so pent-up and flustered, fighting to outdo each other with teasing remarks and calculated touches. Marshall understands, now, the tantalizing power that he has over Kells in their present circumstances. He could say anything, do anything, and Kells would bend to his will like a gangly marionette; as if they had never separated in the first place. The urge to test the limits of this power is so strong that it could cleave him in half. He needs to resist, for more reasons than one.Â
âWhat about you,â Kells chokes out, predictably deflecting.Â
âWhat about me?âÂ
âDo you⊠have someone?âÂ
Marshall looks at him coolly, watching his discomfort grow with irrepressible interest. âDepends on what you mean by that.âÂ
Annoyance turns Kellsâ voice sharp, his eyes flashing. âI mean a boyfriend. Or a⊠fuck - a husband. What the fuck else would I be talking about.âÂ
âTouchy,â Marshall says, smiling again when Kells groans loudly at the ceiling.Â
âYou, playing with me like this. It, like⊠it hurts. âcause I know itâs notâŠâÂ
He doesnât finish his thought, but Marshall sobers anyway, caught off-guard by Kellsâ directness. Itâs true. Heâs being cruel. Selfish.Â
Marshall glances down at his own hands in his lap, his brow furrowing. âHonestly, Iâve accepted that I canât do the whole⊠relationship thing.â He sighs softly, pacing at the border of the overgrown thicket of dark memories that he doesnât venture into by himself anymore.Â
âAre you happy?âÂ
Marshallâs frown deepens. He meets Kellsâ eyes again, sees how wholeheartedly eager he is to hear the answer to this question, despite the pain pulling at his forehead and the sides of his mouth.
Still such an open book, Marshall thinks, something viscous and warm spilling over in his chest. Heâs saved from needing to concentrate on lying convincingly by a businesslike knock at the door.Â
intro to an AU, written earlier today while in an emotional funk. F-slur warning + very slight gore warning!Â
Marshall runs as fast as his legs can carry him, the tall grass in the unkempt field behind his school stabbing at his face as he goes. His heart is thundering, and his balled-up hands are sweating, and thereâs a pebble or something inside his left shoe that sends pain shooting up his calf with every frantic step. Heâs been running for what feels like forever, but he canât stop; the sounds of distant rustling and panting and cussing dragging him along by the throat.Â
Get back here, you little fag!
Show you what happens when you donât fuckinâ know your place!
Marshall trips over his feet, pitching forward onto his already-bruised knees in the muck and letting out an involuntary cry of despair; sheer dread piercing his stomach as he starts instinctively preparing himself for the vicious punishment that will follow, some distant part of him questioning how heâll explain it to his mom this time.Â
He only realizes that he is alone after heâs been curled up in the fetal position for a while, gnats fluttering against his face and tears drying at the corners of his eyes. Maybe heâs been alone this whole time, spurred on by nothing but dark echoes. Marshall sits up, smears the mud from his hands onto the front of his once-white shirt, and listens again to be extra sure. He hears nothing but insects trilling and the gentle whispering of the grass in the slight breeze, and feels a crushing weight ease off his shoulders at last.Â
âThank you, God,â he murmurs to the vividly pink evening sky, clasping his palms together in front of his face because it feels right.Â
Marshall stands unsteadily on one leg while he shakes out his left shoe, tugging it back on after a small shower of debris falls out. He spits, wanting to rid himself of the commingled tastes of blood and dirt, and finds it to be a futile effort.
Okay, he thinks, now what?Â
His heart quivers when he looks around and is unable to remember what direction he came from; identical shifting walls of grass greeting him no matter where he points his eyes.
Fuck.
Itâs the only thought in his mind as his panic builds like a wave, his breaths punching out of him in broken little gasps as he turns himself around and around, desperately searching for any indicator of the path heâd taken to get here. Tears stream down his face again when he thinks about the sky inevitably darkening into a pitch black before heâs made his way out of the field, and imagines struggling through the grass in the dead of night; so exhausted that he falls asleep upright and loses control of his body and drops backwards like a sack of bricks and hits his head on a jagged shard of stone poking out of the mud and splinters his skull open and leaks his useless brains out in a goopy puddle and nobody ever, ever, ever -Â
Breathe.Â
I want my mom.
Just breathe.
Marshall breathes, clutching his hands to his chest and sucking in deep lungfuls of swampy air.Â
Itâs after heâs managed to collect himself enough to think through his options for marking his path in case ne needs to backtrack; that the sound of a low, bestial growl splits the stillness.Â
fuck it, iâll spoil some more of this for you, idgafÂ
âAlso, you canât just assume everyone wants to fuck you.âÂ
Kells tips his head at him, a knowing smile quirking his mouth. âYou do.âÂ
Marshall looks away, sick with nerves and low-simmering anger. That lazy-cocky look in Kellsâ perpetually sleepy eyes and the flick of his tongue across his lips make Marshall want to swing at something.Â
âYeah, uh, weâve established that.âÂ
âSo whatâre you waiting for?âÂ
Marshallâs eyes snap right back up to Kellsâ face.Â
âDonât play with me,â Marshall warns, very much not in the mood for riddles.
Theyâve been taking things slow, Marshall cautiously following Kellsâ lead. As such, Marshall has gotten used to dancing around the concept of penetration, only ever gauging Kellsâ general feelings about it through coded pillow talk.Â
âIâm being for real. Iâm ready, I think.âÂ
Marshall swallows. âYou think?â
Kells rolls his eyes. âSometimes I wish you would just fuckinâ⊠âÂ
âWhat?âÂ
âFuck, yâknow. Youâre so nice all the time. Itâs like, where did all the fire go?âÂ
âYou want me to fuckinâ hit you or some shit?âÂ
âI want you to fuckinâ take what you want, instead of waiting around and crying about it.âÂ
âYou,â Marshall says, and all his thoughts get tangled up in that single word, so loaded that he doesnât bother extracting a sentence from it. Anything he could possibly say would be inadequate anyway.Â
âCâmon,â Kells goads, with his mischief-making face on, âdonât be a bitch.â

âI never been to a gay bar before,â Kells says, apropos of nothing.
Marshall nearly drops his phone. âUm.âÂ
The alarms blaring in his head are very distracting.Â
âIâm kinda curious.âÂ
âAm I not exciting enough for you?â Marshall manages, trying for sarcasm. He tastes acid.Â
âRespectfully, youâre boring as fuck. You never wanna go out.âÂ
ââcause youâre not out,â Marshall says, embarrassingly high-pitched.Â
âIâm not gay,â Kells reminds him sagely.Â
âAnd Iâm not boring. Fucker.âÂ
âYeah, you are. Youâre like, if grandma cardigans and room-temperature soup were a person. I still love you though.âÂ
Marshall blushes so hotly that it actually takes him aback.Â
âAw,â Kells says, reaching over to pinch Marshallâs cheeks, smiling at him all gooey and fond.Â
âStop,â Marshall says, smacking his hands away, fidgeting in his seat. âThis is bloodlust. I wanna kill you so bad right now.âÂ
âAww,â Kells says again, more emphatically.Â
At least theyâre not talking about gay bars anymore.Â
âI bet youâd be crazy popular. Drunk dudes swarming all over you.âÂ
Great.Â
âWe ainât talking about this,â Marshall says, tense. Â
âWhy not? Tell me what itâs like. I know you were all over that shit when you were my age.âÂ
âI was an extreme closet case when I was your age,â Marshall says, ignoring the way those last five words jab at him. âAnd donât you ever get tired of whoring around?âÂ
The lighthearted expression on Kellsâ face falls away, replaced by a quicksilver flicker of something dark and derisive. Marshallâs heart seizes.
Fuck.Â
âIâll whore around as much as I fucking want. Weâre not married. Weâre not even fucking dating.âÂ
lmfao the tiniest little smidge of bodyswap fic i wroteÂ
âHow are you not hittinâ your head on door frames constantly,â Marshall says, exasperated, having taken a break from staring at Kellsâ mouth shaping his words in his reflection to totter around the room, his new height almost dizzying.Â
Kells, on the other end of this nightmarish FaceTime call, groans in Marshallâs voice. âAnd you are like, even more pocket-sized than I thought, dude.âÂ
âPocket-sized?â Marshallâs raises his - Kellsâ voice in outrage, and the rough rasp of it does something weird to his stomach. Which is fucking stupid for several reasons, the main one being that Kellsâ voice is his voice at the moment.Â
âYou are so fuckinâ small,â Kells reaffirms, and Marshall picks his phone back up in time to watch Kells - wearing his face - roll the sleeves of the shirt Marshall had fallen asleep in all the way up to reveal his bare arms, a distinctly sun-deprived shade of white. âI kinda always assumed you were pretty jacked under those fuckinâ sweatsuits. The NordicTrack and all that? But nope. Small.âÂ
He pinches at the underside of one of Marshallâs arms, and Marshallâs temper flares at the sight, Kellsâ jeering words hitting him like a slap.Â
âYouâre one to talk,â Marshall blusters, âYouâre so goddamn skinny I feel like Iâm gonna keel over when I take a breath.âÂ
The kidâs face falls, and the hem of his shirt goes with it, hiding his insane jumble of tattoos from view. âI guess youâre right,â he says, with a distinct air of sad puppy.Â
Guilt needles its way past the cold shell encasing Marshallâs heart. âWell, do you want a pic, at least?âÂ
Back to excited puppy.Â
âFuck yeah! Iâll just crop myself out if Iâm too ugly.âÂ
Marshall pauses. âIsnât the point to have a picture with me?â He sounds like a fucking douche saying it, but hey. Blunt is efficient.Â
âIâd rather die than look bad in a picture with you,â the kid says, with surprising vehemence.Â
Marshallâs eyes travel over his shock of unkempt blond hair, his shapely mouth, his long limbs.Â
âI donât think you could if you tried,â Marshall says, absently. âLook bad, I mean.âÂ
He instantly regrets saying it when the kid blushes as bright as if Marshall had outright propositioned him.Â
