A scarce akagi tsuka tanto
late 14th Century
Japan
Made of wood, with yamagane (rough copper) mounts, decorated with hanabishi mon (Takeda family) among waves.
The style of the koshirae recalls the later Nambokucho period (1333-1392) and the Naoe Shizu school. The classic setting is similar to the Katana N 239 from the Compton collection, attributed to the Mito school.
