i think the only difference between jake's "persona" and his "true self" is that he's a little more emotionally vulnerable and expressive. just a little softer, a little more serious, and a little more mature. just because... i feel like he's scared to trust that people will like him still even when he's not being the energetic ball of energy he usually is. this "true self" can reveal itself when necessary. but i don't think it's much different from the person jake presents on the day to day except for days when he's really not feeling great, which can happen because i really do feel like jake has anxiety as well. so. he has his bad brain days but i don’t think he ever lets anyone really see them unless they’re super super close to him, like gina or amy or his mom or nana. and that circle widens as jake learns to trust but i don’t think he’s completely learned yet either so. i DUNNO NOW I’M RAMBLING WHATEVER.

     jake is a lot more shaped by nurture than nature i think, simply because a lot of his prominent personality traits stem from issues created by his home-life growing up. he's got a lot of trust/control issues because his father left when he was much younger. he's very feminist because his mother and his aunts and his nana and gina were basically his whole support system growing up. he is unabashedly himself because his mother encouraged self-expression. never really felt the need to mature because when his mother couldn't watch him, nana would and gina would be there and they'd behave like children forever. it's also common for a kid who's had a traumatic incident (like the loss of a parent) happen in their life to hold on to their childhood in some aspects whilst having to grow up in others. that's so much of jake that's just because of the things that have happened to him. so yeah. much more nurture.

more meta things that have been in my inbox since the dawn of time:JACOB PERALTA HAS ADHD. that being said, this little guy needs stuff to do all the time otherwise he's pretty much miserable. this made school a nightmare for him because there's so much sitting and listening required and he would much rather just DO, so his preferred stimulation/activity level is high. he just needs to be doing something and putting himself to work otherwise he feels pretty irritable and bored and bleh.i don't think he ever really learned to cope with too little stimulation because he doesn't really handle it very well even now on the show. that being said, when there's nothing really to focus on, jake will force something. like for instance: taking home old case files. learning new things about die hard or any other interest he has. making up cases. creating new aliases.when he is much too stimulated, which is a thing, he kind of just takes a break until the stagnancy gets to him and from there he decides what’s the most important thing to work on/most time consuming/most fun and works from there. 

meta questions i should have answered a million years ago: jake is always ready to take the lead. unless the leader role is already given to someone else, in which case he will defer to them... unless he thinks his idea is better in which case he will just do his idea and accept the blame when it blows up in his face... which is something he does much less now, but he used to be VERY disrespectful when it came to the chain of command as evidenced in the first season. it really boils down to this: if jake thinks he’s right, he’ll do what he wants until he realizes for himself that it was the wrong thing. you can’t just go “jake that’s wrong”. he has to figure it out his own way. people who try to skip that and force him to do what they want usually probably have more of an issue with jake’s behavior than people who are willing to let jake struggle against the leash until he can come to his own conclusion, like captain holt. he’s just a very strong-willed kid, i feel. this also comes from what i figure are control issues because... you know. his father left and he had no control over that and so he spent the rest of his life trying to keep things going the way HE wanted them to go and sometimes you can’t do that. 

“  HERE .”  she’s  holding  a  cup  of  iced  coffee  with  soy  milk  for  rachel ,  which  she  offers  generously .  it  was  strange  to  think  that  she  was  here ,  WALKING  next  to  rachel  freaking  berry  on  a  hot  summer  day  ( in  small  shorts  &  a  fashionable ,  but  breezy  top ) , after  buying  her  a  cup  of  coffee  UNPROMPTED ,  out  of  her  own  free  will ,  as  if  she  wanted  to  see rachel  smile  because  of  her . “  i  stopped  by  the  lima  bean  on  the  way  here  --  i  didn’t  know  what  you  USUALLY  get ,  so  i  ordered  two  of  the  same  except  yours  has  soy  milk ;  you’re  a  VEGAN ,  right ?  ” 

              despite the situation, maggie can’t help but chuckle as she spots the familiar paramedic out of the corner of her eye. she doesn’t exactly know her, but lately, they’ve ended up in the same place. her patients turn out to be maggie’s victims. it’s not exactly a lighthearted connection, but still. when maggie catches her eye, she tilts her head towards the victim. ❝i’m sorry you lost him.❞ it can’t be easy; maggie knows she’s not nearly strong enough for a career like that. ❝we really have to stop meeting like this.❞  //  @rosaetes  //  starter call.
