Stop buying too much paint! (a foolproof cheat sheet) ✨
Let’s be real for a second. There is literally nothing worse than being covered in dust, holding a messy roller, and realizing you just ran out of paint with half a wall left to go. Crying. Defeat.
I swear, if I get asked exactly how much paint to paint a room one more time I might actually scream (just kidding, but tbh it’s the most common question I get in my DMs whenever I post room makeovers).
We all suck at math. But you really don't want to buy too much and waste your money, or buy too little and ruin your weekend. So, before you run to the hardware store and blindly guess, here is my ultimate, brain-dead simple cheat sheet to figure it out.
step 1: measure the box Grab a measuring tape. Measure the width and the height of the wall. Multiply them together. (Width x Height = Square meters). Got 4 walls? Do it for all of them and add it up.
step 2: subtract the holes I see people forget this all the time lol. You are not painting your windows and doors! Measure them, calculate their square meters, and subtract that number from your total wall number. That’s your actual paintable surface.
step 3: the golden rule (coverage) You can’t just buy a bucket and hope for the best. You have to check the actual paint coverage per litre on the back of the tin. For premium stuff like Dulux, it’s usually around 10-12 square meters per litre.
Divide your paintable surface area (from step 2) by that coverage number. Multiply by 2 (because you always need two coats for a flawless aesthetic finish).
Boom. That’s the exact amount of litres you need.
I'm begging you to stop guessing at the paint store. Just do the 2 minutes of math, save your money, and get to the fun part of redecorating. 🤎✨
(P.S. what colour are you guys painting your rooms this season? I am obsessed with muted terracotta right now. Let me know down in the notes!)
