German Sleepyhead
Beast that puts dirty pawprints on my walls
They are so Sounds
So happy with Róise for being a very good girl just now and not beating anyone up bc I didn’t notice there was a bone out on the bed and letting me put it away for her with no fuss.

that's interesting about roise! my dog's hair was very hard too, not soft at all, but she only shed twice a year thankfully 😅 I wonder what determines if dogs shed always or just seasonally, obviously it isn't coat length.
Hormones can play a part, too. dgmw the Aussies do shed a few hairs here and there all the time. I do have to vacuum from them weekly at least during the lighter shed periods. Right now I can pet Callie and only a few hairs come off vs during season changes running my hand down her back produces a small airy tumbleweed.
Róise has a lot of clumping right now I’m working on raking out and getting rid of that will help lighten the ring of hair that develops daily around where she’s crated. She is also at least twice the size of the Aussies so that’s twice the area of hair production.
same for your sister's gsd btw! love her short, sleek coat, reminds me a lot of my late dog, who was a gsd mix. the gsds I see here are all very fluffy, it feels like rabbit fur when you pet them, even the "short coated" ones
I feel like Róise is a bit of an anomaly. She is supposedly an AKC purebred GSD but she’s so lanky and weird compared to other GSDs I’ve seen.
Her fur is not soft except the backs of her ears. I have never felt puppy fur as rough as she was, almost like scouring pad fiber. It improved significantly as she matured but nowhere near as nice to pet as the Aussies. The hairs are very coarse, even her undercoat.
I’ve been collecting Callie’s fur every time I brush out her seasonal sheds to practice spinning yarn but even with the volume Róise produces it’s such an unpleasant texture I don’t bother. Sort of like comparing a merino wool to a hardier heritage breed’s fiber. The kind of sweater you don’t want against your skin because it’s so scratchy.
She also sheds so much more and worse than Callie it’s Sisyphean trying to keep my house clean. Someone once called them German Shedders and man were they right.
