So until now when I have wanted extra light on location I have gone the strobist route by using speedlights and shoot thru umbrella’s. To be honest, these have served me well. Even the one time I took my Bowens studio flash, a borrowed battery power unit and my Bowens beauty dish to a location shoot, the hassle of carrying the heavy kit outweighed the advantages. If I had an assistant I would go this way but when you are working alone, it’s just too much trouble.
Now the shoot thru brollys are great but their stability in even the slightest wind has meant that on many occasions I have had to abandon using them. Persistence under those conditions meant another trip to the bin to deposit a crumpled ball of fabric and tangled wire!
Enter the Rogue Flashbender. I have seen these advertised for quite some time and have been toying with the idea of giving them a go. I like idea of being able to shape it, roll it up and put it in my bag and the softbox style diffuser cover is also very interesting. I’m not totally convinced they will be alright to use on a very windy day but maybe, just maybe, it might be a little bit more resilient.
So, to cut a long story short, when a Rogue kit came up on Ebay, I bid for it and was lucky enough to win it. Delivery is expected any day now!
My plans for 2016 are to move into a much more editorial artsy and Vogue’ish style, so the slightly harder light I am expecting will be ideal. I am going to be trying the Flashbender with both TTL speedlights and the usual Yongnuo manual flash combinations.
