So I have a question about T. I've been on one tube of androgel for the last 2 years and I'm about to go up to 2 tubes. I'm also on lots of medication for bipolar which has stunted my hair growth. I use to have lush body hair but the meds have caused hair loss, sadly. I have heard of trans folk using rogain to stimulate hair growth. Any thoughts or experience?
I haven’t any personal experience as I’m really not a fan of medication. I spent much of my childhood doped up and the side effects/complications really messed with my system… so even if I felt like I wanted more hair growth, I’d probably wait it out.
Why not see what happens with your increased Androgel dose first? You’re upping your dose, why not wait till your body acclimates to that before considering other options?
I also think it’s worth mentioning that I know someone who is straight up bald, and I gotta say their head hair loss really ramped up when they added rogain to their regimen. Obviously correlation doesn’t equal causation, but I do think it’s worth noting.
Also, somebody chimed in on one of my earlier posts regarding a similar product (there comments can be found here: http://k-con.today/post/144825142422/aaaandreww-said-literally-have-dealt-with-pretty)… and I gotta say I’ve heard similar things about increased acne and the like with products that claim to increase hair growth.
I think it’s important to note that changes don’t happen overnight. My bro didn’t grow a beard till he was 21, and he definitely hit puberty around 16… meaning it took him 5 years, at a minimum, to get facial hair. Point being, I wouldn’t sweat it and I’d personally wait it out if I were you.
I’ve been on T for 2.5 and my facial hair is pretty sparse, I don’t have sideburns, and my check hairs are awkward and patchy… slow going, but for me, the journey is the best part!
I’m typing this response on mobile so hopefully everything I wrote makes sense. If ya wanna chat further, feel free to get in touch.
Minoxidil (Rogain)
Minoxidil does work, but it takes forever. I used it in my 20s to help with my beard growth. I had to use it religiously for about 15 months before I started seeing noticeable results, and then after that they came quickly. Now I pretty much always sport some facial hair :).
It is a pain … I was using it 2x a day, and sometimes I think it gave me headaches. You have to be careful about blood pressure and hypertension while on it; make sure you look for signs like swelling ankles. It also dries out your skin pretty bad and takes a while to dry.
I used it for a while on my chest - not as religiously, but still about once a day. I didn’t get any results from it, but I didn’t persevere over the 15 month mark. I’m trying again now, still once a day, but I think I need to move to 2x a day for any progress.
Minoxidil will also make your eyelashes grow long and dark. When I was using it for my beard, I had lots of lady friends remark how awesome my eyelashes looked … Definitely wasn’t something I was going for, but it wasn’t something that bothered me either. Hand hair also increased, and I had light fuzz on my ears and between my hairline and my temples. When I stopped using minoxidil, my hand hair/ear hair/temples returned to normal, but by facial hair continues just fine.
If you’re thinking of fortifying your beard it will work, but you have to be persistent and patient. So far it hasn’t helped with my chest hair, but I need to be a bit more rigorous to confirm whether or not it affects chest hair growth.
