It had taken two days. After exhausting his resources Xander had been forced to resort to more old-fashioned methods to track down his old teammate, which had been rather annoying and had put the thief into a rather grumpy mood.
The target of his search, Vinny, had seemingly disappeared without a trace after his termination from Team Rocket. Despite the pink-haired boy's vulgarity and complete disrespect for his superiors (only part of the reason he had been terminated), Xander had taken it upon himself to check in on the boy, despite his own revulsion toward him.
In a lot of ways the blonde could see himself reflected in Vinny like a mirror, and it was this reason that he found that he felt, among other less-appealing emotions, a sense of responsibility for him.
Finally he had come across a promising lead that he was convinced would finally allow his search to end. The notion was confirmed once he turned a corner into a darkened alley and spotted his target, so intent on the masterpiece he was spraying onto the cracked brick wall that he didn't seem to notice the intrusion.
"You were pretty hard to track down, Vinny," he announced his presence to the ex-grunt as graciously as ever. "I mean, for a punk with pink hair ya keep a pretty low profile."
It would have been impressive if Xander didn't suspect that it was all completely unintentional on Vinny's behalf. If they had been in Goldenrod it would have taken Xander a mere matter of hours to find him. Of course, they were in Celadon, an less-familiar city in an unfamiliar region, where he had been forced to employ all of his skills to find just one person.
"Arceus," he sighed, taking note of the younger boy's condition, which put lightly, seemed a bit worse-for-wear. "When was the last time you had somethin' to eat?"

Crouching at the edge of a wheat field, May put her phone to sleep and pulled her jacket tighter around her to fight off the cold night air. Ah well, it wasn’t her jacket. It was Vinny’s, a loan because he was in one of his rare generous moods. Still, it wasn’t a gift without a catch. He was halfheartedly trying for her again, trying for a one night stand. For her part, she wasn’t interested, but she would happily take his jacket.
He didn’t seem to mind the cold terribly, crouching like her and absentmindedly stripping a stalk of wheat to shreds.
"You seem skeptical." He finally said as they were down to one minute.
May hummed at that, vaguely musing on how the clouds of vapor they breathed out were like smoke signals on their location. Not the best for trying to stay hidden. “Won’t deny it, but I’m not the one who’s the expert on sneaking onto passing wagons. What makes you think that we can catch a truck already in full gear?”
"He’s just an old farmer. He drives at a snail’s pace. It’ll be like one of those hay rides once we get on. What? You a slow runner?" He smirked at her.
Even though she knew he was trying to get a rise out of her, she still sent him a tame glare before leaning forward to catch a glance around the bend of the road. “Oh here he comes!” she said quietly as she caught sight of the headlights.
"Okay," Vinny shifted himself so he could start off at a dash, "Stay close behind me, and try to stay out of the mirrors."
May also positioned herself to a runner’s start, wondering how in the world they were going to stay out of the mirrors, but he dashed off after the passing wagon before she could ask.
"A little warning would have been nice," she laughed as she came up behind him.
"Gotta keep you on your toes!"
Vinny had been right. The farmer was a terribly slow driver, so they caught up to him easily enough. The issue really came to getting on the truck without rocking the whole wagon on its suspenders. Vinny caught the side and swung himself onto the back easily. He held an arm out to May.
"Light feet!" he coached before swinging her up with him onto a hay pile.
May held her breath for the screeching halt, for the driver to come out waving a pitchfork and vomiting out a rainbow of curses, but nothing happened. The truck still went its steady way, the driver ignorant of anything amiss.
"Relax!" Vinny chuckled, throwing a handful of hay her direction, "You’re too antsy for your first crime."
May grinned as she picked out the hay out of her hair and flicked the remains at him. “I’m still going to pay him at the end.”
Vinny scoffed, rolling his eyes. “You’re so lame.”
The insult rolled off May’s back easily, and she reached over to gather a blanket’s worth of hay into her lap. “Wow, it’s so warm. Think we could sleep here?”
"Yeah, if you want to catch pneumonia." He retorted, even as he laid back into the hay for what looked like a nap. May laughed at the hypocrisy before dumping an arm’s load of hay onto his face.
She laughed harder as he sputtered angrily, trying to wave hay out of his face. “Just trying to keep you warm.” She reached back for another armful.
"Warm, my ass," He spat out, taking a hold of both her arms. He lay back down, forcing her to lie next to him, "Now keep still and let me sleep."
There was a twinge in her chest, a very dangerous twinge given who it was for. May shook his hands off and flipped to her back, so she could stare up at the breathtaking starry sky, a sight she could only see this far out into the countryside.
"And I’m the lame one?" May laughed to herself as Vinny began to lightly snore, "You’re the one missing out."
