before rocket was one of the more prominent tower techsmiths, he ran with the iron lords. back when he was first rezzed and went to the budding camps under the traveler, people were still like. pretty scared of void, and he especially got a lot of scorn because his void manifested in a way that's strange and unruly to control. during that time he mostly stuck to using solar

eventually, he heard of the iron lords, and that felwinter was apparently an amazing voidwalker. rocket, wanting to learn how to keep a grip on his light and prove that void isnt dangerous, put some good robes together and travelled to the himalayas.

from there, felwinter took him in and raised him. trained his light, his discipline, his skills and pursuit of knowledge. rocket wasn't one of the big name lords, but he was still noted for utilizing his strength in an honestly terrifying manner, despite his well-meaning nature.

felwinter is also the reason why rocket didn't go to the plaugelands and get slaughtered by rasputin. fel didn't keep rocket behind because he thought that he was incapable, but because he saw a future that was worth preserving. he knew that ras would try to take that from the world, and fel wouldn't have it.
