when they finally start orbiting each other again, after the john dust has settled, but even before anything is official, aaron notices that robert touches him differently now. robert was never shy with his affections, not after their relationship was out in the open, but they were affection. kisses, an arm around aaron's shoulders, a hand on his knee. now it's a hand on him, softly layed and unmoving, or sitting too close on the sofa, leg pressed right up against aaron. it's robert being unable to fall asleep if he's not touching aaron in some way, like aaron will fade away if he closes his eyes.
they're not back together yet, nothing has happened beyond a few uncertain kisses and falling asleep together out of sheer tiredness and robert can't not be touching aaron. aaron asks if he's alright, but any answer feels incomplete after everything that's happened. but stroking robert's hair until he's almost asleep gets aaron the full answer: he's can't believe aaron's really there, after everything. that he's ok and real and lying beside him.
and then a flash of a memory comes back to aaron, the car in the water, robert sat curled in a hospital chair, how long it took for robert to be able to sleep without clinging to aaron. so aaron makes a promise to himself, that he's going to make sure robert doesn't need to be the one reaching out to him ever again.
