The cruel tyrant Lord Soules, William II de Soules, d. 1321, built Hermitage Castle. He was said to practice the black arts and had a diabolical familiar called Robin Redcap or Redcap Sly. He dyed his red hat with his victims' blood. If the blood on his hat dried out, he would perish. Lord Soules died a prisoner in Dumbarton Castle, but Redcap Sly lives in Hermitage Castle still with the ghost of Mary, Queen of Scots.
