âHome is where love resides â¨memories are created, â¨friends and family belong, â¨and laughter never ends.â - Unknown⨠Robert Sugden Week - Day 4 - The Mill
âWell youâre a Dingle arenât ya? Us Dingles stick together.â Or - the Dingles arenât as awful as they seem right now.
This started as a shitpost... but somehow turned into a full on fic.Â
Iâm still doing the other days of Robert week - this just sort of happened and I wanted to post it.
Realism? What realism?
---
Fourteen... days? (AO3)
âAlright Sugden, time to go.â the guard opening Robertâs cell door said as he walked in. âPack up and letâs go.â
âWhat? No, my solicitor said I wasnât being moved until next week. Please. I havenât told my family yet. I need more time.â Robert pleaded, feeling panic rise in his chest.
Aaron had come to see him just a few days ago but he hadnât had the heart to tell him he was being moved miles away to the Isle of man.
âMoved? What are you talking about? Youâre getting out mate, youâve served your time.â
âWhat? Thatâs impossible. I got 14 years.â
The guard looked at the papers in his hand.
âYouâre Robert Jacob Sugden, born April 22nd 1986?â
âYesâŚâ
âWell then pack up, youâre getting out of here.â
âBut⌠how?â
âI donât know mate but according to this you had to serve 14 days and today is day 14⌠so⌠letâs go.â
âBut⌠I got life. A minimum of 14 years, no chance of parole⌠Iâm supposed to be transferred to the Isle of Man next weekâŚâ
âMy guess is that someone, somewhere made a mistake when entering your details into the computer.â The guard shrugged.
âBut⌠when they find out⌠theyâll take me back, wonât they?â
âYouâve served your time the way itâs in the system. They canât charge you for the same thing twice.â
âBut a man died because of what I did⌠his family wonât let this lie when they find out.â
âFrom what I heard a rapist died.â The guard said and gave him a pointed look. âAnd the worst the family could do is get some people fired. They canât charge you again.â
âAre⌠are you sure?â
âYep. Ask your solicitor. Thatâs how it works.â
âThis canât be rightâŚâ
âLook, mate, youâre getting out. Youâre going home. Or donât you want to see that little lad again?â The guard asked, nodding at the pictures of Seb next to the pillow on Robertâs bed.
âOf course I do.â
âThen pack up and come with me so we can get this sorted. Do you want to call someone to come pick you up?â
âErm yeah⌠my erm husband.â
âWell come on then.â
Robert quickly grabbed the pictures of Seb and the few personal belongings he had with him and followed the guard.
âDo you want to get changed out of that uniform first or make the call first?â
âErm, I think Iâd like to get changed first.â
The guard nodded and lead him to the processing offices, the same ones where heâd been brought in two weeks ago.
âRight. Sugden. Here we go. Here are you clothes and everything you had on you when you were brought in.â
Robert took the bag with his clothes and quickly got changed. it felt good to be able to get out of the prison uniform.
âJust leave the clothes in there, Iâll sort that later.â The guard told him. âDo you want to make that phone call now?â
Robert nodded, still not sure what was happening. he dialled Aaronâs number and his heart sped up with every ring.
âHey this is Aaron, leave a message.â
âVoicemail.â
âAlright. Do you want to call someone else then?â
âI donât know any other number by heartâŚâ Robert admitted.
âRight. Yeah, Iâd tell you to check your phone but itâs probably dead by now.â
âI didnât have a phone on me⌠I left it at homeâŚâ
The guard nodded.
âDo you want to call a taxi?â
âI erm donât think I have enough money on me.â Robert said. âI suppose Iâll just get the busâŚâ He looked at the change heâd just taken out of his pocket.
âIâd give you a lift but my shift doesnât end for another six hours. I donât suppose you want to wait that long?â
âNot really no.â
âThought as much. Sign here to confirm everything is in order and then Iâll walk you out.â
Ten minutes later Robert was standing outside the prison, apparently a free man, and not sure where to go.
He knew Hotten well enough but never paid much attention to bus stops or time tables. He decided to just start walking until he found something like a map. Or someone that looked like they knew where to find a bus stop.
In the end it took him only 15 minutes to find a bus stop and then find the right one to take to get to Emmerdale. It turned out Hotten prison was on the same route as Livâs school and the digital time table told him the Emmerdale express would arrive in 6 minutes.
He kept looking around, expecting prison guards or armed police officers to show up at any moment to drag him back, but the only thing that showed up was the bus. And an old lady he vaguely recognised as someone from Harrietâs church events.
He paid the fare and sat down in the first available seat and spent the whole drive to Emmerdale looking out the window.
When a police van pulled up next to the bus at a red light he nearly had a heart attack, but when the light changed the van drove off and the bus continued its journey like any other day.
Like there wasnât someone on it that should be in prison for the next 14 years.
âNext stop: Emmerdale village.â the driver announced and Robert looked out the window just in time to see the drive safely through our village sign.
He got off the bus and looked around as the bus drove off. Everything looked the same. Still no police waiting for him to drag him back, no sign of anything like that happening in the near future.
And surprisingly, nobody in the street. Or at least nobody he really knew.
He considered going to see Vic but dismissed that thought pretty quickly. There was only one person he really wanted to see so he made his way to the mill.
The place looked the same, only the plant pot with the aster next to the front door had been knocked over and the spare key underneath it was gone.
Thatâs when Robert realised he didnât have his house keys anymore and he actually had to ring the doorbell of his own home.
There was no answer on the intercom but someone buzzed the door open so he walked in. The door to the flat was left ajar and he could hear the sound of the tv.
He pushed the door open and saw Aaron fast asleep on the sofa right away.
âLiv?â He said softly, gingerly walking into the flat like he didnât live there, like he shouldnât be there.
âRob?!â She dumped the plate she was holding in the sink and rushed over to him. âWhat⌠what are you doing here? Did you escape? Did they break you out?â
âNo⌠erm apparently I served my timeâŚâ
âWhat? But you got 14 years. I was there, I heard it myself.â
âI know⌠I donât know what happened⌠but the official records said 14 days instead of 14 years⌠and today is day 14 so they let me out.â
âHow is that possible? Who changed the records?â
âI donât know. I really donât. But the guard said as far as theyâre concerned Iâve served my time⌠and that they canât charge me for that again.â
âSo this is it? Youâre home? For good?â
âI erm⌠yeah⌠I think so.â Robert said and looked at Aaron. âHow is he really? He said he was fine when he came to see me the other dayâŚâ
Liv shook her head.
âHeâs a mess. He passed out on the sofa last night after spending the night getting drunk⌠and thatâs basically what he does every night.â She told him. âOnly when Seb was here he was a little bit like his old self.â
âLet him sleep for a bit.â Robert decided. âDo you still have my phone here? I need to call my solicitor to make sure this is real.â
âAaron has it.â Liv said. âHe thinks I donât know but he keeps it on him all day and looks at the pictures on it.â
Robertâs heart broke hearing how much Aaron was hurting without him.
âUse my phone.â Liv offered. âIâll look up the number.â
About two hours and some stressful phone calls later, Robertâs solicitor had confirmed that according to the official records he had indeed served his time and was a free man again.
âSo youâre sure this is it? Theyâre not going to haul me back there?â
âNo. I donât know what happened but everything checks out legally. All records state 14 days as your sentence.â
âAnd there is nothing they can do about that?â
âThere will probably be an investigation if Leeâs family pushes for it⌠but that guard was right, they canât charge you for what happened to him again.â
âSo Iâm free?â
âYes⌠it definitely looks like it.â
âI canât believe itâŚâ
âHonestly, neither can I⌠you must have a guardian angel looking out for you somewhere.â
âYeahâŚâ Robert said, looking at Aaron who was starting to wake up on the sofa. âWell⌠thanks. For everything. I hope I never need your help again.â
âI hope so too. Enjoy your life, Robert.â His solicitor said and hung up.
âOh it lives.â Liv said sarcastically as Aaron sat up and rubbed his head.
âShut up Liv.â He mumbled without looking at her.
âI have a surprise for you.â
âIâm not interested.â
âNo I think youâre going to like this surprise. Itâs a good one.â
âLiv I told you, Iâm not interested in whatever you â Robert?â Aaron said when he turned around and saw Robert sitting at their kitchen table. âIâm still drunk arenât I?â
âMaybe. But Iâm home. For good.â Robert said, getting up and walking over to the sofa.
âBut⌠how? This isnât possible.â
âI donât know how⌠but it all checks out legally. I just called my solicitor. He checked everything. Itâs real. Iâm home.â
It took Aaronâs hungover head a second to process what Robert was saying but then grabbed him and wrapped his arms around him.
âIâve missed you so much.â
âI missed you too. More than you know.â Robert whispered as he hid his face in the crook of Aaronâs neck.
âIâll leave you guys to it. I promised Chas Iâd stop by to see Eve and help with the baby shower preparations.â Liv said, grabbing her bag.
âEve?â Robert asked, confused, pulling back slightly to look back and forth between Aaron and Liv.
âOh⌠right. I didnât tell you⌠Mum and Paddy had a girl. Her name is Eve.â Aaron explained.
âAnd theyâre having a baby shower type of thing for her on Saturday.â Liv added.
âThey are?â Aaron asked her.
âYou were there when she told us! You said youâd be there!â
Aaron shrugged.
âI havenât really been paying attentionâŚâ
âWell maybe we should all go.â Robert suggested. âIâd like to meet my new sister in law.â
âReally? You want to go to the pub now?â Aaron asked.
âWhy not? Apparently Iâm a free man so there is no reason why I canât have a drink with my husband in my local and meet the newest member of our family.â Robert said and pressed a kiss to Aaronâs lips. âBut first you need a shower because you smell like a brewery.â
Aaron showered and changed in record time and the three of them made the short trip to the pub.
Somehow none of the Dingles were around, and the only person they saw was a confused looking Eric who waved at them in passing.
âYou ready for the madness?â Aaron asked Robert, pausing by the pubâs front door.
âNever been more readyâŚâ Robert said and pushed the door open.
The pub was quiet. Chas and Charity both behind the bar, Cain scowling into a pint, and Ryan sat at a table, typing on his laptop.
âHello Robert.â Chas greeted him when she saw him. Completely calm and happy, like her son in law wasnât supposed to still be in prison.
âErâŚhi⌠ChasâŚâ
âItâs good to see you love. Sorry I wasnât there at the sentencing.â
âItâs⌠itâs fine⌠youâd uhm⌠just had a babyâŚâ Robert stammered, confused at the lack of reaction from her.
Chas smiled.
âYeah my little Evie. Do you want to meet her? Sheâs your sister too after all.â
âWait. Can someone tell me whatâs going on here?â Aaron said, looking at his mother. âHeâs supposed to still be in prison for the next fourteen years and youâre acting like heâs only popped down to Tesco.â
âNothing is going on, love.â Chas said sweetly.
âYou two just enjoy being together again, eh?â Cain told him.
âBut⌠itâs not possible that Iâm out. It shouldnât be possible.â
Cain shrugged and sipped his pint.
âNothing is impossible.â
âEspecially not when you know the right people.â Charity added. âWith the right skills.â She said and quickly glanced at Ryan who grinned back at her.
âWait⌠did you do this?â
âDo what?â Charity asked innocently.
âGet me released after 14 days instead of 14 years?â
âNo. What gave you that idea? I wouldnât even know how.â
âYouâre all in on it arenât you?â Aaron said, looking at his relatives one by one.
âNot me.â Liv said, holding her hands up in defence. âIâm just as surprised as you are.â
âYou⌠you hacked the prison system?â Robert asked, looking at Ryan.
âOf course not. That would be illegal.â
âLook he was miserable without you and from what Liv told me the same applied to you.â Chas snapped. âWhat kind of family would we be if we didnât do everything we could to help?â
âBy forging legal documents?â
âNothing is forged.â Cain said, sounding somewhat offended. âEverything is legal. All original documents.â
âDid you just admit- You know what? No. Never mind. I didnât hear anything.â
âGood lad.â
âI just⌠canât believe what you all did⌠I mean⌠didnât⌠do for me.â
âWell youâre a Dingle arenât ya? Us Dingles stick together.â Charity said as Chas put two pints on the bar and an orange juice for Liv.
