I enjoyed the combination of media formats used in the Time Is Illmatic doc to tell a comprehensive story of not only Nas' life, but also the Rap scene and environment for black men growing up in that era. Archival footage from previous concerts, VO with still images, and talking head interviews were all interwoven and felt balanced and were used at the appropriate points to reinforce the narrative. For interviews featuring Nas, I also appreciated the variety of ways he was captured (e.g. very close up shot with harsh shadows / Rembrandt lighting in the first image) to reinforce the drama of the narrative.
Watching Cutie and the Boxer left me feeling somber and wistful - the film attempted to end on a positive note after the successful gallery showing of the couple together, but I couldn't help wondering what could have been if Noriko had opportunities to be an artist instead of taking care of Ushio and their son. And although Noriko finds a sense of independence, it doesn't feel like Ushio has really changed or even acknowledged his behavior, or show an appreciate of Noriko's talents.
It was an interesting parallel between Noriko and Paula Scher, who we saw previously. Both were young artists who fell in love with an older man, but Paula was able to develop her career and find success in a way that Noriko was unable to.
