After being ordained as a Baptist minister in 1940, he became involved with the Los Angeles branch of the World War II "Youth for Christ" (YFC) movement. The organization sought to bring the youth together through Christian fellowship and activities, while providing them with spiritual guidance. In 1950, Robert Pierce founded World Vision International (WVI). WVI sought to provide long-term assistance to impoverished communities by focusing on sustainable development initiatives such as health care, education and economic opportunity.
