Tyrants perform only one true service, and that is to serve as a warning to others. Power will always beat against the bars by which it is contained, promising greatness if we will only turn the key and let it out. If we are to profit from Putin's example, we should not wait until a Putin of our own is in sight. Truth-telling, the rule of law, safeguards against corruption, freedom of inquiry: these are the guard-rails of a free society. It is the responsibility of us all to maintain the watch; and to protect and uphold the institutions by which tyranny is held in check.
