"Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States has been elected the 267th pope and will soon step onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica as the new leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.

Prevost, 69, from Chicago, Illinois, is the first ever pope from the United States. He will be known as Leo XIV.

A leader with global experience, he spent much of his career as a missionary in South America and most recently led a powerful Vatican office for bishop appointments. He is expected to build on Pope Francis’ reforms."

I've seen SOOOO many posts complaining about new American pope. Understandable.

HOWEVER.

I think it's important to note Pope Leo is a naturalised citizen of Peru. He's spent years working there, became bishop and archbishop there.

in his speech, POPE LEO DIRECTLY ADDRESSED PERUVIANS IN SPANISH, THANKING the ones who came to see him in Rome, and telling Peruvians he hasn't forgotten them, even though he's staying in Rome now. He's also said stuff against JD Vance and what Trump's administration is doing.

He may be American by origin, but I think the fact he didn't mention American in his speech (as far as I remember) but directly addressed Peru and said he hasn't forgotten its people, says a lot about him.
