Hugs: I
A drop of blood dripped from the curve of Jason’s green gloved hand onto the pristine white snow below. The crisp winter air ruffling the black curls of his hair but Jason didn’t feel the cold, his blood was still hot as the red and blue lights of cop cars flooded the alley. From his rooftop vantage point he watched the cops pull Two Face from the rough ground of the alley and throw him in the back of one of the cars. Jason felt his entire body shaking with tension under the red and green uniform.
In 1, 2, 3, 4. Out 1, 2, 3, 4.Â
Just like Dr. Thompson said. A month ago, Harvey would be leaving that alley in an ambulance. A year ago when Bruce first found him, there might have even been a body bag. The soft sound of a foot sliding over settling snow made Jason acutely aware he wasn’t alone on the rooftop but he couldn’t bare to turn around yet.
In 1, 2, 3, 4. Out 1, 2, 3, 4.
It had been about 21 hours since one of Two Face’s lieutenants had squealed during an interrogation. They had kept a ledger for insurance. Names, dates, locations, even a list of people Harvey had killed. It had been a momentous evening, it would be enough proof for Gordon to send him to Blackgate for a long time. Then Jason saw it in the margin, black and white. Just a footnote, like a casual afterthought rather a man’s murder.
Willis Todd.
Jason was on his bike and out the cave before Bruce had even registered what was going on, he was like a bloodhound. 5 broken noses, 7 fingers that bent the wrong way and a fractured leg, he had Two Face’s location. Bruce had only caught up to him after the fact.
“Rob-” Bruce’s voice fell silent as Jason felt a hand on his shoulder, “Jason.”
“I wanted to do it.” Jason choked out, his voice quivering as much as his body, “I wanted to just keep hitting him and hitting him and…”
The hand on his shoulder turned into an arm as Bruce pulled him into a hug, “I know Jason, I know. But you didn’t and I’m so proud of you for it. Today you proved you’re better than him, than all of them.”
Jason wasn’t sure how long the hug lasted, but up there, on that rooftop in the swirling snow, he felt better than he had in a long while.
