From metaphysical to material debt Over the past two centuries humans increasingly reject the idea of owing life to some metaphysical authority (God, destiny, providence). Modernity emphasizes chance and contingency. Most lives are accidents, not gifts. From this perspective, the old framework of gratitude makes no sense, and insisting on it breeds resentment.

Debt as social-economic mechanism Modern humans are “born into debt” in a literal sense by mortgages, consumer loans, student debt. These are not abstract debts; they are coercive structures that enforce continued participation in the economic system. The psychological consequence is complex. People feel trapped, resentful, and entitled simultaneously. Debt becomes both a constraint and a point of rebellion.

Population response to perceived life value If most life is accidental and laden with structural debts, reproduction becomes morally and practically fraught.
