Anxiety going into work
I’ve never really been one to feel super anxious going into my nursing job. I feel like I’m pretty much prepared to deal with anything. I’ve been a nurse for 2.5 years now, have gotten into my groove and have worked on the same floor the entire time. My fellow staff members are amazing and we’re all friends.
Over the last year with COVID-19, my stress surrounding work has just gotten worse and worse. Being an actual COVID floor honestly was the least stressful part of it. After we resumed just being Internal Medicine (Non-COVID), the acuity of our patients began to climb steadily, as well as hundreds of nurses in the institute quit their jobs.
Every time I go to work, I know it’s going to be incredibly hard and stressful. I used to have all my morning meds and documentation done by 10am, have time to chat with my patients and their families. Time to relax and sip on my coffee. Now I’m lucky if I get to eat my lunch by 3pm and drink my coffee at all.
All the nurses on my floor have been feeling it. That dreaded burnout. Patients are sicker, we have less staff and there is so much expected of us coming from one of the top ranked hospitals in the world.
It makes me feel guilty. I love being a nurse. I actually enjoy bedside nursing and the hustle of being a straight days RN at such a large and high acuity hospital. Recently though, I’ve just felt exhausted. We’ve sometimes gone up to 6 patients on days, which for some hospitals is normal since the acuity is much lower, but at a main campus, top 3 hospital in America, it’s dangerous. It’s almost unmanageable. You don’t sit. You don’t eat. You don’t drink water. You go go go the entire 13 hours sometimes. No wonder nurses keep calling off.
I just hope things normalize when not only the sickest of the sick come into the hospital because of COVID-19 fears.

A little common sense goes a long way! Take heed of this sista’s words🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Please don’t tie up hospital staff with non-emergencies. We all know those people that want a battery of tests every time their noses run... this is not the time chicken little✌🏾 #TeamDL #nottoday #Repost @keepingitkinky with @get_repost ・・・ I love y’all but this ain’t the time....
