she was a normal girl, at least thatās what everyone had always assumed from the day she was born. mina was a child that laughed a lot and had joy in the little things in life ā her most favorite things were flowers, butterflies, and the color purple. she really didnāt need a lot to be happy, and with a loving family that always tried their best to keep that smile on the little girlās lips, she knew that she really had everything she could ever ask for.
it was one unfortunate evening that she first got in touch with her powers. as six-year-old mina was taking a bath, she suddenly felt her skin tingling ā eventually burning in the water. and panicking, she jumped out of the tub. the painful sensation left a chemical burn starting at her lower back and going all the way down her left thigh; and it took her a long two years to figure out that it was herself who caused those things to happen.
she didnāt know if these powers had always been there, or what had triggered them, but she was scared. she was terrified to hurt someone, especially her family who she loved so dearly, and so she chose to hide in her room, growing more and more distant to the people who mattered the most to her. mina managed to hide her powers from her mother and father who became increasingly worried as she grew older, but she chose to keep observing and stay to herself as much as she could.
things changed when mina was fourteen years old and her mother became pregnant again. suddenly, she felt like she shouldnāt be hiding anymore, and when her little baby brother was born, she finally came out of hiding. minhyun was his name, and she believed that he was the most precious thing she had ever seen. holding him in her arms, she caught a glimpse of her parents smiling happily again, for the first time after years. the curse that kept her away from her family seemed lifted, and mina chose to just not think about those painful powers anymore, even if the scars kept reminding her every day.
she was fifteen when one evening her parents asked her to babysit minhyun, and mina all too happily agreed. another accident. the girl started shaking when the boy started crying and suddenly gasping for air, when he became pale in the face and she didnāt know what was happening to the child. minhyun died right in front of her eyes, and it took her a moment to realize that it was her own doing that had caused this to happen. she was just trying to feed him his dinner, not more than that, but her touch had turned the food to acid and had burned the helpless babyās throat. mina knew it was too late to save him, and not knowing what to do, her only option was to run.
mina didnāt know where to go, but going back home was no option for her. for a few years she wandered, changed her appearance whenever she stopped in random places she had no connection to. she finally took the time to control her powers, to research and learn; she needed to know enough to not accidentally hurt people anymore. but at the end of her journey, the joyful girlās heart had turned into acid from the core and there was nothing left of the girl she once was. there was no normalcy in her life anymore; and she was lost.
maybe thatās why she went to find her grandmother ā a glimpse of a normal life. her parents hadnāt visited the old lady in years, but when she knocked on the door, unsure about what was going to happen, the woman pulled her into her arms immediately. she knows, that was minaās first thought. but her grandmother never said anything about it and neither did mina.
she stayed for a year as she quietly let the guilt eat her up. āi have to leaveā she declared one morning, knowing she had to do something, and quietly, her grandmother agreed. she didnāt have a lot of money, but she was intelligent, and so Ā persistence had managed to get her a scholarship at gumi. she wasnāt sure if it was the right way to go, but she knew it was better than hiding forever. donāt let your mistakes define you, those were her grandmotherās last words before she took off. but mina knew that it was too late for that, she had become acidic; she had become her mistakes.
WHAT CAN THEY DO?
DEFINITION
acid manipulation
mina is able to generate acid out of any liquid as long as itās within her reach. those acids can be ranging causticity as well as liquidity, however can not become solid. her fingertips are the key to her power, and her hands the only part of her own body that is immune to the caustic effects of the acid. the acid liquids she creates can be controlled by her, giving her the ability to make it travel in certain directions, take simple liquid forms (such as a snake, for example), and have it touch her specific targets. once she stops controlling her chosen liquid, it will turn back to itās normal state (e.g water will turn back to water after the effects of the manipulation are lifted).
WEAKNESSES
(1) the liquid mina wants to manipulate has to be definitely visible to her, for example in a clear water bottle, as she needs to be able to determine the type of liquid she is going to shift.
(2) the farther she moves away, the harder it will be to control and eventually lose its effect. this distance ranges from a 30 to 40 feet mark, depending on the type of liquid, causticity and liquidity she chooses.
(3) unfortunately, besides her hands, mina is not immune to the effects of the acids herself and has occasionally ended up hurting herself with her powers as well due to lack of control.
(4) it takes a lot of effort to uphold the manipulation, and therefore she tries to not use her power for a long amount of time. the longest she has managed to uphold a liquid shift before having to release the manipulation is 3 minutes. she has never attempted to train and extend that time.
(5) although she has definitely tried before and she would love to be able to do it, she had to learn that blood is a liquid that she can not turn into acid.Ā
