I learned the history of the Motherworld under the watchful eyes of the High Scribes. But through all its glory, one myth captured my imagination. That of the Chalice. The Redeemer. The first Princess Issa. And though I knew it was only a fable, the stories of that righteous child slaying her enemies with such grace gave me comfort.

"With the Princess, I wanted to contrast with the 1950s, idealized feminine looks of the Queen by keeping it relatively in the same timeframe, but with a different approach. There was this French designer named Madame Grès, who did these beautiful, draped, very Greco-Roman, classical pieces. The pooling of these lighter, flowing, more translucent fabrics seemed to suit the Princess. it just seemed softer. I also wanted to try to make it look as if light was emanating from her. [...] Her other dress that she wears in the garden was still structure, but with lots of classic draping. It was this really, really, really sheer silk jersey, but it was a million yards of it, which we had Fortuny pleated. We wound up dyeing it the palest of pale blues and then behind it was an electric turquoise. It looked like the sky in the morning, this light emanating from the blue sky."
