My Gengar, which I met as a gastly, was my third Pokemon. I met him with my starter Froslass (still a snorunt at that time) and my liepard that I caught myself as a purrloin. I was an edgy kid who kept both of her Pokemon on her shoulders, don't judge me <3
I was very big on battling, and still am but I do it as a second full-time job and switch to remote shelter work (like dealing with papers) when I'm away to battle. The money is good. But when I was little I wanted to be a gym leader. So, naturally, I didn't want any part-time jobs so I can focus on battling. (kinda stupid when you consider that most gym leaders have second jobs)
My mom wanted me to have options tho, so, she signed me up as a volunteer at a local shelter. It was a small shelter that needed volunteers since they got a load of gastlys from a breeding mill bust.
That's where I met my timid boy, the full details weren't there but they suspected he was abused or traumatized in a way since he was scared of anything and everything. Refusing to eat, sleep and even float around. He just hung in one spot shaking and looking around with big 'ol eyes.
I didn't even wanted to do shelter work in the first place but then I found myself assigned to be that little guy's foster on top of helping around the shelter. I was bummed out at first, he needed time and patience to be comfortable and I wanted to never stay in one place, and battle everyone that made eye contact with me.
But, well, when you hang around someone for so long you warm up to them and I couldn't possibly act anything less than nurturing to such a poor but kind Pokemon. We grew on each other, and I knew it was a good fit when he started to want to battle and train with me.
Next thing I know I have adopted him.
He is doing much better now, I traded and traded back with a friend a few months ago to evolve him. He is still easy to scare and has high anxiety but is pretty confident while battling.
Some days I think him cuddling or asking to be held when he is stressed or scared is less serious and more about his cuddly personality <3
