Just decided to go for a drive with our Campervan. So close to home ( less than an hour) and already had the feeling we where driving through France! In the past, autumn had been Wakana’s favorite season, and she had welcomed the deep burgundies, russets, and golds as the leaves changed. This year, however, the transitioning colors only served as a reminder that unlike last year at this time, Rihan would no longer sit by her side on the engawa, laughing and drinking sake and talking into the wee hours of the morning. He would no longer wrap his haori around her shoulders to ward off the wind’s chill; for that matter, his haori no longer smelled like him as the months had gone by. No, this year, the season’s change brought with it grief and soul-deep guilt…a litany of what-ifs and what-could-have-beens…and why not me instead. After all, what human wife expects her non-human husband to die before her?
