Kevin Smith fans will get to play a direct role in whether his comedy series “Hollyweed” moves forward. The filmmaker behind classic comedies like “Clerks” and “Mallra…
Now here's something I'd like to do here in Malaysia. On a smaller scale. Is it too 'idealistic' for me to imagine a scenario where...(*Warning: Long post ahead)
...there is a single fund to create a few series/movies and so on.
With that fund, create a free channel/platform which lives online and also on other broadcasting platforms where the public can watch & decide what they want to watch more of.
The pilots that get the most 'real' votes (maybe even pledges) will then be developed for real within the 'influence' that the show generates. For example, a show that has thousands of pledges will get higher budgets and shows that get just enough, will be produced with lower budget - all shows made specifically for a specific audience.
*Yes, I am aware of all the variables/problems that come with this as it is essentially a crowdfunding type of structure. And yes, I am aware this is not a new idea - NetFlix and so on is sorta built on this premise.
But I'm always perplexed as to why mainstream content is made the way it is here. Where we don't have that much money to go around to make good content, so almost all of the 'good money' only goes to one category of mainstream content and everyone else has to 'make do'.
When we have so much more stories that can be told to an audience that may not be huge in Malaysia itself, but that 'niche' audience is part of a larger audience in other parts of the world.
If there is enough 'good' #MalaysianMade content that is made for beyond the mainstream audiences locally, then there is a higher chance that we can send our stuff overseas and play the international game, put us on the map for more than just politically motivated game-changers no?
